First Episode of Showtime’s “Shameless”

It’s hard to deny the likability of William H. Macy, Joan Cusack and Emmy Rossum, but it feels like Showtime’s new series, Shameless, is trying waaay to hard to be edgy.  You know there’s a boob shot, bj, S&M,? Girl strap-on guy, gay sex pics, a solid straight sex scene, and a drunk dad all in these first 20 minutes.  Which is to say, obviously, they’re going for a dark-comic thing with the “edginess”, but I like my dark comedy when you can’t really tell if it’s supposed to be funny or sad. Amazingly, William H. Macy doesn’t even appear in the episode until the very end (well, he’s also in the beginning for a little bit).

This just reeks of a try-too-hardy attitude.  Like Roseanne on crack. It’s also based on a much-beloved British show of the same name. Still, I’ll probably give the first season a gander.

Why is that AMERICANS think they can steal and think their better at it, The originals rock this lot a very distant second.

Totally agree with you Dave. I've heard nothing but great things about the original. Sadly, it's difficult for Americans to get access to all the great shows you have in England. Still trying to watch The Trip with Brydon and Coogan.
