This “job montage” sequence from this week’s Step Brothers, a comedy starring Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, drops a lot of F-Bombs. A lot. I haven’t heard that many since my sophomore year in high school when my pre-algebra teacher called me in for a meeting. That was rough. This is just funny.
Despite the quality of his comedies trailer off sharply, we still have a soft-spot for man child Ferrell and when John C. Reilly does goofy comedy like this, there is hardly anyone better.
Variety has a story this morning that producer Judd Apatow and screenwriter Etan Thomas (Tropic Thunder) are teaming up for their take on the Baker Street detective.
Baron Cohen will play the good detective and Will Ferrell will be his sidekick Watson. The two comedians teamed up as competing race car drivers in Talladega Nights, and for those that saw the movie Baron Cohen was one of the best things about it. His effeminate French driver was spot on, in that stereotypical “How Americans view the French” sort of way.
[Random Aside: Anyone remember the Will Ferrell movie Dick? He played Woodward or Bernstein and Michelle Williams and Kristen Dunst were White House dog walkers who were Deep Throat. Actually kinda funny and worth seeing for free.]
The picture is set up at Sony and there is no indication how this will affect Guy Ritchie’s serious adaptation of Sherlock Holmes that is set up at Warner Bros. Also, now that Madonna is having sex with A-Rod, is it possible that once Ritchie and her divorce that he’ll regain his movie-making mojo?
Something else to ponder: which sounds like the better Sherlock Holmes project - comedy or drama?
Don’t know how Dave Grohl keeps a straight face throughout his duo with Will Ferrell, but he does. The two performed at a recent benefit show for 826LA, which helps kids 6 to 18 develop writing skills and aids teachers in inspiring their students to become better writers.
“Leather and Lace” was originally a Don Henley and Stevie Nicks duet.

Another summer another goofy Will Ferrell comedy. But unlike his other recent movies where he’s playing an insecure pompous douche, his new team up with John C. Reilly has us excited. They both play manchildren, who become step brothers when their single parents become married.
It looks funny, since you’d normally expect this sort of thing to happen with 10 year olds, but it also looks kinda sweet. That they’re rocking LCD Soundsystem in the trailer doesn’t hurt either.
Step Brothersis directed by Adam McKay. Everything McKay and Ferrell have done together so far, including their stints on SNL, have at the very least had inspiring moments of comedy. This looks no different.
Neil at Film School Rejects has read the script for Ferrell’s upcoming comedy, Step Brothers, and insists that it is hilarious.
John C. Reilly should do more comedy, I think that we can all agree upon. He’s got the touch.
I wasn’t sold on Will Ferrell’s upcoming basketball romp, Semi-Pro. To be honest it looked a bit like the worst Will Ferrell movies recently. You know the ones where Ferrell plays the overconfident, pompous asshole (who’s secretly insecure inside). Just substitute news anchor for figure skater, for NASCAR race driver, for soccer coach, yadda yadda.
I can’t believe I just included Anchorman with that list. Someone shoot me, cause that was a great flick. Anyway, Semi-Pro, may possibly be good. And this video of Jackie Moon getting his inner 70’s funk on is pretty hilarious. Jackie Moon is a former singer-turned owner/player/coach of the ABA Flint Tropics basketball team. Moon, puts more time into pregame promotions than he does basketball.

Will Ferrell is going to bring his pompous airbag routine that he’s perfected over the last dozen or so movies to college campuses in support of his upcoming ABA basketball movie Semi-Pro. The college tour, sponsored by Funny or Die, will also feature the talents of Zack Galifianakis, Dmetri Martin and Nick Swardson.
Ferrell will play be the highlight, however, as this will be his first standup tour since joining SNL so many years ago. It’d be interesting to see how he does, since there’s no doubt he’ll be rusty. Also, people will have the chance to submit clips to Funny or Die in an attempt to have them played throughout the tour, you know for those fifteen minutes of fame and all.
Here are Will Ferrell’s North American tour dates:
Feb. 4: Manhattan, Kan. (Bramlage Coliseum - Kansas State University) Feb. 5: East Lansing, Mich. (Jack Breslin Student Events Center - Michigan State University) Feb. 6: Columbus, Ohio (Jerome Schottenstein Center - Ohio State University) Feb. 11: University Park, Pa. (Bryce Jordan Center - Penn State University) Feb. 12: Kingston, R.I. (the Ryan Center - University of Rhode Island) Feb. 13: Chestnut Hill, Mass. (Conte Forum - Boston College) Feb. 22: Chapel Hill, N.C. (Dean Edwards Smith Center - University of North Carolina)
Jackie Moon likes to get down and somewhere along the way he’ll act out in anger, a boy cloaked by his man body. Will Farrell plays one comedic character, not unlike say a lot of other actors in Hollywood. When he’s on there is no one funnier, granted a few of most recent movies have been flops, but still . . . he’s like the New England Patriots of comedy flicks. How can you possibly justify betting against him?
But there’s no telling, by now regardless of the outcome you have a fair idea of just what’s going to happen in Semi-Pro - lot’s of shenanigans.
Farrell stars as Jackie Moon, the owner-coach-player of the American Basketball Association’s Flint Michigan Tropics, who “rallies his teammates to make their NBA dreams come true.” The film also stars Woody Harrelson, Andre Benjamin, Maura Tierney, and Jackie Earle Haley. Kent Alterman makes his feature directorial debut.
Will Ferrell has rolled up a huge bank of comedy credit around these parts, if for nothing else than the utterly hilarious line in Anchorman, “San Diego, that’s German for whale’s vagina.” And if you’re like me than you just read that line in your best Ron Burgundy voice. Cause that’s how we roll.
Anyway, his schtick is slowly getting old; it’s the man-child with fake confidence who ends up losing his shit characters that have to go. His last few movies have been good for a chuckle but nothing like his early work and I wonder if that has to do with the tiredness of playing slight variations of the same character as opposed to say whether or not the movie is actually funny. Basically you can replace male figure skater for tv anchorman for NASCAR racer and we’re talking about essentially the same movie. Now we can replace all of those with ABA basketball player.
We’d love to see him take on more quirky oddball humor like his great amazingly funny and nuanced work in Stranger Than Fiction. But what do we know.
His latest has him starring as a Bill Walton, 70’s ABA type of character. Could be funny, could be meh? That’s pretty much what you’re guaranteed with Ferrell these days. But we’ll still go and watch Semi-Pro. After all he hasn’t used up his credits. This is the first teaser for the movie.
I’ll admit it. I definitely laughed in a few places, but more from the sexy music. This one stars Woody Harrelson, Andre 3000, Jackie Earle Haley, Andy Richter, Will Arnett, Maura Tierney and Rob Corddry. With a cast like that, there has to be a ton of laughs. Right? Right?
Semi-Pro shoots it’s way into theaters on Feb. 28, 2008
While we’re at it. Most of you have probably already seen the Will Ferrell and Pearl vidoe “The Landlord.” This has been out for a few days., actually since Monday night. This time around Pearl plays a cop in the interogation of Will Ferrell. And she’s going to get a confession even if it’s NYPD Blue style. If foul-mouthed kids isn’t your cup of tea, well, then bug off.
It also marks the last time she’ll be in acting. The site released a press release from Pearl, saying “My ventures as an actor on the Internet have been rewarding and spiritually fulfilling, but now I must look to broader challenges as I approach my 26th month.”
Gotta love the ninja. Ask a Ninja got a little sit down time with Will Ferrell and Jon Heder during their junket for Blades of Glory. Part of me thinks this one is scripted but part of me really doesn’t care. Love the ending when Ferrell goes, “I look forward to coming to your dojo.” And the ninja replies, “I look forward to killing you.” Anyway watch until the end for a sweet cameo. And no it’s not Owen Wilson, Luke Wilson, Ben Stiller, Tim Robbins, Vince Vaughn or Jack Black.

Stranger Than Fiction - Will Ferrell, Emma Thompson, Dustin Hoffman, and Maggie Gyllenhaal star in this unusual comedy. Will Ferrell is an IRS agent who hears the voice of a novelist in his head. He must persuade the novelists (Thompson) to change the ending of her story so that he may live. Very Kauffmanesque.
Tideland - Terry Gilliam directs this story about a young girl with a terrible life. To escape said life she retreats into a fantasy world. Unfortunately even Terry Gilliam can’t save this convoluted mess and a plot similar to the much superior Pan’s Labyrinth. Speaking of? How did Pan’s not win the Oscar for Best Foreign Picture?
A Good Year - Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott teaming up for a movie that’s the exact opposite of Gladiator. Crowe stars as an investment banker who inherits a French vineyard. And he learns the true importance of life. Yeah, it’s that schmaltzy.
Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny - The epic story of how The D became the greatest rock band in the world. Um… Jack Black and Kyle Glass steal a supernatural pick. It’s sort of funny, but was much funnier when they used the same jokes for their HBO show.
The Return - A creepy horro movie staring Sarah Michelle Gellar. Someone needs to call her agent and let them know SMG doesn’t need to do teen horror movies anymore. Treads a similar tone to The Grudge.
And just because we love Jack Black, Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly. I’m still sad I missed this live. Oh well.
