So I missed Watchmen and that sucks

But holy shit can you believe the finish to that Red Sox game?  God almighty.  Not sure if they are going to be able to win two games at the Trop, but tonight could be a momentum changer.

The Red Sox have completed the largest comeback ever by a team facing playoff elimination, defeating the Rays, 8-7, on Drew’s walk-off ground-rule double/single over the head of Rays right fielder Gabe Gross to score Youkilis. The Red Sox were down 7-0 following the sixth inning, but scored four in the seventh, three in the eighth, and the game-winner in the ninth. Drew had previously hit a two-run homer to make it 7-6 in the eighth. It’s pandemonium at Fenway Park. The Sox trail in the series, three games to two, and will board a plane bound for St. Petersburgh, Fla. tonight.

I don’t need to imagine the pandemonium taking place having been there for the craziness of 2004.

Manny can now be Manny in LA

Not quit. We’ll miss ya big guy, you will always be that lovable stoner out in left field to us, who could hit like a ballet dancer but held up minor league games to look for diamond earrings.

Sadly, the Sox might have been better off trading for Favre.

NW Film & Video Fest: “High and Outside”

Part of the problem with Major League Baseball today, aside from steroids, lack of competition, payroll disparities and the Yankees is that because of the high salaries players are no longer players, they are tiny corporations. Alex Rodriguez is a prime example of this. He’s so vanilla because he won’t ever jeopardize his fiefdom of marketability. Gone are the good ole days of Dock Ellis pitching a no-hitter on LSD, Ty Cobb sliding high into second base, the personalities, anecdotes and legends which outlived the game itself.

billlee.jpgBill “Spaceman” Lee, a southpaw for the Boston Red Sox and Montreal Expos was one of those personalities. Statistically, he was a better than average pitcher. As baseball writer, okay let’s be honest, incomparable baseball deity Peter Gammons said in the film, “you don’t win 17 games in three straight seasons by accident.”

But it wasn’t his skill on the diamond that makes him a compelling subject for a documentary, it’s his out sized comedic personality, being black-balled from baseball, his non-sequitors, it’s his showmanship. High and Outside (2006 EEphusfilms), directed by Peter J. Vogt explores this. Though this is being hailed as a documentary, it’s more like a sun-kissed portrait (or a puff piece for you negative folks) to the baseball oddball.

High and Outside does do a nice job of tracing Lee’s career from USC to Boston to Montreal and after being blackballed by MLB (he was a union player rep at a time before free agency and those players were traded more often by clubs. Lee’s outspoken-ness, marijuane use and rebellious spirit are reasons given for being blackballed) he continues to play baseball in senior men’s leagues.

With that said, much of the negative is curiosly glanced over. There are no interviews with Don Zimmer, the Red Sox manager he fueded with, the dissolution of his first marriage is merely mentioned, etc. etc. Clearly, the filmmakers had something else on their mind than a fair and balanced documentary.

When the movie soars, it did so by broadening its scope using Lee as a lens to look at social issues in both baseball and the country in a period of great uncertainty. In this sense Bill Lee is a perfect conduit to examine these issues, since baseball was not the primary concern in his life. He loved reading and thinking about ideas, once can imagine in another universe Bill Lee as a college professor. It just so happened that he was really good at throwing a baseball.

In a Q&A after the film, director Peter J. Vogt was asked if he ever saw another side to Bill Lee, specifically the painfully shy child hinted at. Vogt said, “We kept trying to dig and poke to find another character, but we couldn’t. I think it’s a defense mechanism that has become his art. He has so much energy, it’s complicated.”

In most documentaries this would be a major hindrance, but here Lee’s gregarious personae makes the movie. His numerous one liners alone are worth the admission ticket. Even with the best Hollywood screenwriter you couldn’t replicate them. Bill Lee drops non-sequitor one liners like he dropped his famous eephous pitch.

By the film’s conclusion it matters little that we get to understand who Bill Lee is as a person, the motivations behind the exterior character, because you feel so much happier having spent two hours with him. Plus, you learn a little bit about Red Sox history, the counterculture and baseball as well.

Because of this, I think Red Sox fans may find this movie more enjoyable than most, however the audience I screened the film with seemed to laugh and enjoy everything Bill Lee said. He’s a natural storyteller and the director was wise to stay out of the way and let Bill Lee do his thing. In this sense, High and Outside is one of the more enjoyable movies I’ve seen all year. There’s no doubt that has to do to with Bill Lee’s personality, a goofy child housed in a 61-year-old body.

Ryan Montbleau’s homecoming gig in Boston

A quick follow up courtesy of Scott Bernstein over at Hidden Track. Seems both us and them were following the story about Ryan Montbleau’s difficult decision to not cancel a show last Sunday night (which coincided with Game 4 of the World Series) at the Paradise in Boston.

Bernstein was there on Saturday and he does a good job, despite being a Yankee’s fan (though most people insist the Red Sox are the new Yankees), of capturing the music and the moment for Ryan, the band, and the fans who turned out for the gig.

They almost sold out the Saturday night show and sold a respectable amount of tix for Sunday’s show. All in all it looks like every won over the weekend.

As always thanks to the boys at Hidden Track for doing my work for me via the always important follow-up.

Two World Series follow-ups

redsox2007.jpg

So we’re having a hard time concentrating on music, movies and celebrity gossip this morning. The usual shit we cover. Let’s just get it on the table. We’re Red Sox fanatics, as in we used to sneak into Fenway Park as children, remember starting fights in the bleachers, etc. etc. There is no shame in that, except when it comes to all the bandwagon fans courted over the past five years, the constant “we’re not the Yankees” mea culpa from long time fans still struggling to adjust to the new world order.

But still, it’s pretty sweet to watch your team win the World Series. It just is and I’m not making any apologies for that. But two things struck me as fairly interesting this morning, moving beyond the sports related stories:

  • The first is that Jordan’s Furniture, a four-store chain in the greater Boston metropolitan area, ran a promotion back in April that if customers bought any furniture that month and the Red Sox won the World Series, well, those customers got the furniture for free. Turns out some 30,000 customers have hit the jackpot from this promotion. No details have been released as to how much free furniture the store ended up shelling out, but luckily they took out an insure policy to cover their losses.
  • Also, Jordan’s Furniture is the most awesomest furniture store in the world. This is an undisputed fact.
  • Secondly, the Colorado Rockies love Jesus? The Nation has a story regarding the Rockies desires to sign “character” guys, and by character guys we mean players who love Jesus.

And according to the Tribe of Coors, “character” means accepting Jesus Christ as your personal lord and savior. “We’re nervous, to be honest with you,” Rockies general manager Dan O’Dowd said. “It’s the first time we ever talked about these issues publicly. The last thing we want to do is offend anyone because of our beliefs.” When people are nervous that they will offend you with their beliefs, it’s usually because their beliefs are offensive.

I guess signing good ballplayers and having the second-highest payroll in baseball will always trump Jesus when it comes to the diamond. Also, Pedro Cerrano has come out publicly saying he will never play for the Colorado Rockies, but that was after he sacrificed a chicken and put a voodoo curse on the team … hence why they lost to the Red Sox. Read the entire article, it’s totally messed up and makes me even happier The Sawx won the World Series.

Tonight’s action

Sorry folks. It’s been an odd day. Shopping for a dryer on Craigslist and found a great deal for $30 but then the cord was the wrong kind, who knew right?, and so I had to go to a hardware store buy a new one and change out the cords. Hopefully, when I use the thing I won’t end up killing myself.

Plus the Red Sox are in action pretty much right now as we speak. Hopefully, we’ll get some great submissions for the contest otherwise I’ll just have to give the cds to either the homeless Muslim guy who prays five times a day to Mecca but doesn’t ever leave his spot on the median or the feral cat outside my apartment, who’ve I’ve affectionately dubbed Boutros Boutros Ghali. Is that even how you spell his name?

I’ll be back tonight with the song of the day. I’ve been listening to a lot of the new Rilo Kiley album, Under the Blacklight. So I’m thinking we might go with one of those tracks. To be honest I detested the album after the first listen but I begrudgingly gave it a couple more spins and it’s certainly grown on me. I like that they’ve embraced the worst aspects of the band and this time around it sounds like they’re having some goofy fun and not trying to sound earnest or important, which if you know anything about the band seems more fitting of them.

And just for kicks, tonight is the second season premiere of The Sarah Silverman Show. Sometimes funny, sometimes not. I get that Sarah Silverman rubs lots of people the wrong way, but I think she’s damn funny. That monologue at the MTV movies awards still has me chortling. Cause you know, when god gives you lemons make Lemon AIDS… or something like that. Comedy Central at 10:30 p.m.
