The new season of FX’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia starts tomorrow, and the gang has been working hard to promote it.Â
And we are more than happy to oblige (the six-city tour of The Nightman Cometh has been a hit, though we’ve heard it’s a bit spendy at $80)  since it’s the greatest show in the history of television and Charlie Day is one of the best sitcom characters ever created – his humor knows no boundaries.  A bit of hyperbole, sure, but it’s hard to argue with just how funny the show is.Â
This week teams of guys dressed as the infamous “Greenman” are popping up at colleges and events. I guess they want you to Tweet about it (#sunnyfx for those that care) but I’d rather play dodgeball with them. For the truly obsessive, FX is suggesting fans dress up as Greenman and take photos of themselves in public. Don’t have a green unitard? You can purchase a costume here or here.Â
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia returns Sept. 17 at 10 p.m. ET.
Look, regular readers understand how retarded I am for It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. In fact, I probably write more about that television than any other.Â
Combine that with my nerdery, nay, my general disposition towards science fiction and it’s not a difficult pill to swallow that I was eagerly anticipating their new sci-fi comedy Boldly Going Nowhere, despite landing with FOX.Â
In an interview with SciFi Wire, Glen Howerton revealed that the pilot was shot, but is being completely rewritten to include more science fiction elements.
We just realized it was more fun to embrace the scifi rather than fight against it…In some ways, the first time around we were fighting against it, and I think we fought too hard. It ended up being just not as much fun as it could be. I think we realized that in an attempt to not parody scifi, we ended up almost cutting out too much of the scifi. I think that was a mistake.
But, as Io9 points out, the show isn’t immune from cancellation yet. It doesn’t help that the show would be on FOX, which has a history of cancelling great science fiction programming.Â
If the show never gets off the ground, it would be nice to see them incorporate the ideas into an It’s Always Sunny plotline, which generally means Charlie is up to no good. Still, given the success that The Nightman Cometh meme has had, it wouldn’t surprise us that Boldly Going Nowhere ends up as a dream/drug-fueled fantasy from Charlie.
Back in April we were both surprised and excited by the stealth live-performance of The Nightman Cometh by the gang from FX’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The best sitcom on TV, hands down.Â
There’s a certain sadness when you realize you’ve missed out on what seemed like a once-in-a-lifetime, had-to-be-there theatrical event.Â
Now it seems, according to TV Screener, that it won’t be a one-time performance. The gang has decided to take The Nightman Cometh on tour to promote the season five premiere on September 17.Â
Boston, at the House of Blues, on Sept. 15 New York City, at the Beacon Theater, on Sept. 16 Upper Darby, PA, at the Tower Theater, on Sept. 17 Seattle, at the Moore Theater, on Sept. 22 San Francisco, at the Nob Hill Masonic Center, on Sept. 24
And in Los Angeles, at the Hollywood Palladium, on Sept. 25
Word is, the NYC show also includes the season premiere episode. Tickets for all the performances officially go on sale tomorrow, August 7. Get them fast, because the last live performance sold out in a matter of minutes.Â
When I heard about the “kitten mittens” promo for FX’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, I sort of assumed the promo would be Charlie wearing kittens on his hands or something, but this still made me laugh. Â Best comedy on television right now.
I want Charlie to be my friend IRL, but not the kind that’s regularly in my life. Â Just want him to pop in on occassion for some hijinks and hilarity.
Promo for next season based on the incredible in-joke season finale ”The Nightman Cometh” musical, based on a previous episode where Charlie huffs aerosol and writes the goofy song “Dayman”. Also features Ted Leo and Of Montreal, fantastic musicians who have covered the song “Dayman” in concert.
Okay gang from Paddy’s Pub, you win the internets today (actually they won about four days ago but, ya know, just getting to this now). Everyone else should take their balls and go home. After all you have to pay the troll toll to get into this boys hole.Â
Sing it with me now: Dayman! AH-aaaaaaaaahhhhhh. Champion of the Nightman. AH-aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh. Master of karate and friendship for everyone… [via YANP]
Over the weekend, the entire cast from FX’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia - otherwise known as the best sitcom on television and possibly the history of the world – reenacted the musical Day Man at the Troubadour in LA. Everyone, including Artemis, The Waitress and even Danny DeVito as Frank.
There doesn’t seem to be much written about this event, but I did find the video evidence! And I’m mainly pointing out this happened because, uh, I’d like to know more how this all went down. The one write up at Franklin Avenue, doesn’t really reveal a whole lot.
I’ve had “Dayman” and “Nightman” stuck in my head for days now, thanks to Friday night’s special “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” performance at the Troubadour (they did a second show on Saturday as well).
It was an interesting experiment: The cast of FX’s always irreverent “Sunny” hit the stage to re-enact this past November’s season finale, “The Nightman Cometh.”
However, we get a bit more from Matthew Gonzalez, who writes: “They even did extra songs that weren’t in the episode but helped complete the linear story of the play (this includes Dennis preforming Charlie’s original Dylan-esque nightman song with Mac joining in for the second half). The show was hilarious and it was an amazing experience seeing one of my favorite T.V. shows preformed live–especially in the intimate setting of the Troubador. The cast even came out after the show to sign autographs and take some pictures. I seriously could not have asked for a better birthday gift.”
Rob McEhlhenney, otherwise known as the creator of the funniest show on television, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia – Trey Parker’s cartoon, Tina Fey’s sitcom no one watches, Dwight Schrute and Barney Stimson notwithstanding – has taken the time to dispell 10 myths surrounding his show. It’s really not illuminating, which I blame on the horrible journalists at EW, but anything regarding this show is worth reading. [EW]
Because we love you and we know sitting in a cubicle sucks. Hope this makes it better. This is perhaps the funniest episode of the show, in which Dee dates a retarded guy and Charlie and Dennis get hooked on drugs and start a band.
Finally! Not sure if anyone else has been waiting with a clenched jaw, but the funniest show on television has finally got a release date for DVD. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphiaseason 1 and 2 will drop September 4. The set will contain all 17 episodes.
Presumably this will be in time for the start of season 3. The show doesn’t just cross the line, but it pisses on it quite often. From the steroid episode to the abortion episode or the underage drinking/prom episode we’re talking comedy gold. Yes, The Office gets all the love, but anyone who likes to laugh inappropriately will tell you the gang from Paddy D’s are the funniest gang around. It’s genius is in how crass it is, but it always feels okay because it’s so zany.
And if you’ve never seen the show? Well we’ve taken the time to put together some clips for you to enjoy … or be repulsed by. Either way.
From the Dee and Dennis do crack episode.
Charlie loves America!
Um, the gang goes jihad.
Mac gets laid at an abortion rally.
“I will eat your baby’s bitch!” Sweet Dee on ‘roids.
