Holiday music

We still might take the time to put together a holiday mix tape for you, since we have so many unorthodoxed Christmas songs to share, but if we don’t get to it sometime tomorrow, which, given that we haven’t yet finished or even started our Christmas shopping, is a distinct possibility, we thought we’d turn the floor over to the irrepresible Heather Browne and her I Am Fuel, You Are Friends Mix.

It’s a doozy and she never disappoints.? Don’t forget to check in tomorrow, however, to look for ours.

The BBC returns the glory of the greatest holiday song

As bad as Sir Macca’s holiday song is, The Pogues’s “Fairytale in New York” off the brilliantly crafted, Steve Lillywhite-produced LP, If I Should Fall From Grace With God, is The Sly Oyster’s choice for the greatest holiday song.? It captures the paradox of lonliness and ebullience in the drunken cold weather of New York and making a connection in unexpected places.

However, the BBC didn’t really thinking the use of the words “slut” and “faggot” were holiday-tastic, so the song got edited and then their airwaves were flooded with complaints.? Under duress they returned the song to it’s glory.

The words “slut” and “faggot” had been dubbed out from the 20-year-old festive hit by station executives.? But after a day of criticism from listeners, the band, and the mother of singer Kirsty MacColl, they changed their minds.? Controller Andy Parfitt said the original decision was “wrong”.

The BBC had said that an edited version would be played because “some members of the audience might find it offensive”.

But sister station Radio 2 said it would play the track uncut, and Mr Parfitt subsequently said that after “careful consideration”, the ban on the uncut version of the song would be lifted.? “Radio 1 does not play homophobic lyrics or condone bullying of any kind,” he said.

“It is not always easy to get this right, mindful of our responsibility to our young audience. The unedited version will be played from now on.? “While we would never condone prejudice of any kind, we know our audiences are smart enough to distinguish between maliciousness and creative freedom. In the context of this song, I do not feel that there is any negative intent behind the use of the words, hence the reversal of the decision.”

He told BBC News 24 the decision to edit the song had been made “some months ago” as part of a review of older records played on the station.

MacColl, who was killed by a speedboat off the coast of Mexico in 2000, brands Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan “you scumbag, you maggot, you cheap lousy faggot” in the song, which reached number two when it was first released.? She continues: “Happy Christmas your arse, I pray God it’s our last.”? Another line, where MacGowan calls MacColl “an old slut on junk”, was also edited.

Jean MacColl told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Breakfast: “These are a couple of characters - not in the first flush of youth, I would have thought.? “They are what they are. These are characters and they speak like that.? This is the way they spoke. Today we have a lot of a gratuitous vulgarity and whatever from people all over which I think is quite unnecessary.

A spokesman for the Pogues, who first formed in 1982 and reunited in 2001 after a five-year break, said they “found it amusing that a song that has been one of the best-loved Christmas tunes should suddenly have been deemed offensive”.

I love dustups like this and it’s a relief that even non-trad holiday songs are sort of off-limits.? Now if someone can just completely edit Macca’s “Wonderful Christmas Time”

Christmas spirit with SNL

If this doesn’t get you a little bit excited for Christmas, which is about a week away, well then bah humbug to you dear sir or ma’am.

Everything about this is just great, from the goofiness of the song and childlike chords and piano part, to Jimmy Fallon not laughing, Chris Kattan’s head move thingie and Tracy Morgan doing nothing. It’s so bizarre and wonderful at the same time, much like Christmas.

Seeing as you won’t be getting any treats like this because of the writer’s strike we’ll take what we can get. Why is Tracy Morgan relegated to being the official dancing man when we know he can sing?

And yes, this will certainly be included in our 2007 Christmas music mix that we’ll be sending you off with on Friday for the holidays. Expect some old favorites, some new ones, some to get stuck in your head and hopefully some unexpected gems.

Holiday music for the disenchanted

Love the holidays but hate the music?? Well fear not, because WOXY is streaming a very cool holiday mixer for you featuring the likes of The Pogues, Reverend Horton Heat, Sufjan Stevens, etc.? It’s a very eclectiv mix, but you won’t see any Burl Ives or Bing Crosby for miles around.

Probably a nice compromise for your return home, if you can get Grandma to dig on it.
