The only thing that could have made this video more awesome, was if the bear went on a rampage and attacked the petty little humans.  But seriously, why can’t Discovery Channel or the other science related channel make a show about animals doing human things?  I would pay anything to see that. Though no one stateside actually watches hockey anymore (c’mon NHL you got beat in the ratings by both NASCAR and MMA during The Stanley Cup Finals!), there’s no doubt that those who do love the game. Especially in Canada.

But now the unofficial program of our friendly neighbors to the north is losing the second national anthem of the country. That’s right. Hockey Night in Canada is saying goodbye to its theme song.

The 1968 song written by Dolores Claman, of Vancouver, has become too expensive for the show to keep licensing. At $500 a game, the CBC no longer wants to keep shelling out the dough. So rather than shell out the money, the CBC is holding a contest to see who can write the next theme song for their televised pastime.

Um, seriously? Can’t we work something out here. Because if in a year they lose Don Cherry this is the absolutely last straw for me and hockey. I was able to survive the neutral zone trap long enough to finally see the game return to a fluid play. But this is no good.

“I am saddened by the decision of the CBC to drop the Hockey Night in Canada theme (listen below) after our lengthy history together,” said Claman. “I nevertheless respect its right to move in a new direction.”

Still, they shouldn’t move in a new direction. It is Canada’s second national anthem for crying out loud.

“I wrote this song with a picture of warriors in my head… hockey warriors,” said Claman. “Now it would seem the hockey fans are the true warriors. Thank you so much for all of your kind words and anecdotes about how much the song means to you.”

No indication if Claman is barred from entering the competition, but if she did out of sympathy and respect she would probably win the contest.

Well, that would be the headline if this were about Carmelo Anthony. It’s time to be honest and admit that fighting in sports has nothing to do with thuggery and everything to do with competitive people banging around in a hot box … never mind about that last part. Anyway, 21 seconds into the Rangers-Flyers hockey game last night one of the guys got knocked out cold.
