For a movie that comes out this Friday, you would think today would not be the first day you discover a trailer for the film. But alas, that’s the case with Anne Hathaway’s latest suspense thriller Passengers.
The movie, despite its strong pedigree with actors like Patrick Wilson, Andre Baugher and David Morse should have more buzz surrounding it. Instead it looks like this movie will disappear rather quickly.
What has me intrigued to think this could be more than say, just a simple paycheck cash grab, is that it’s written and directed by Rodrigo Garcia.
Garcia is the son of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, yes the famed magical realism writer, but also an accomplished writer/director in his own right. He’s directed television episodes for HBO and a few decent movies no one has probably seen. Still, the trailer looks a bit ho-hum.
You have to hand it to Anne Hathaway. Watching her in those early Disney Princess Diary type movies, there was no indication that the awkward teen would grow into not just a bona fide actress but a bombshell one at that.
Over the past five years she’s bounced between better than average studio dreck (stuff that shouldn’t be enjoyable on the surface but ultimately are) like Get Smart, The Devil Wears Prada and smaller art fare like Brokeback Mountain and Havoc. Her willingness to choose smaller, edgier roles have lent her the credibility other actors her contemporary don’t have and by choosing relatively quality studio projects, ones that she doesn’t necessarily have to carry or be the star, has allowed her to be a household name.
More than any actress she has superbly managed her career over these past few years. Now she has the family drama Rachel Getting Married. In the Jonathan Demme-directed film, Hathaway stars as Kym, a woman who’s been in and out of rehab for a decade. The estranged daughter returns home for her sister’s wedding. Hijinks ensue no doubt.
Hathaway is generating early Oscar-buzz for this performance, as playing slightly funny druggies often do for actors/actresses.
Rachel Getting Married will have its premiere at the Venice Film Festival. No US release date is scheduled as of yet.

This summer’s Get Smart starring Steve Carrell, Anne Hathaway (let me just say I watched a bit of The Princess Diaries the other night and her hotness could not have been predicted. In this trailer she’s a total sex bomb), Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Alan Arkin and the fat guy from Borat.
This new trailer shows a bit of promise and this could become a sleeper hit of the summer. It’ll make for some nice counter programming to the flurry of superhero movies we’ll be seeing. Director Peter Segal’s new trailer premiered last weekend at WonderCon in San Francisco.
