Saving Public Service in America

Just got this email from an old friend from Americorps, which is in danger of having their budget cut by Congress.

I know how much you care about the fight to Save Service in America – and how much you have done already to help us in this effort. The debate over the budget continues, and Congress remains deeply divided on the fiscal path forward. If we are going to restore funding for the Corporation for National and Community Service–including AmeriCorps–we cannot let up.[Today] has been designated as “Make the Call to Save Service Day.” I’m asking you to please take ten minutes tomorrow and help us make the call to our Senators. All you need to do is tell them why you support AmeriCorps and ask them to help us save service. We must raise our voices, jam the lines, and make sure they know how much this issue matters to us. It’s vitally important that Congress knows how much we care about AmeriCorps and the Corporation for National and Community Service.

Then [today],

  1. MAKE THE CALL: 1-855-US-SERVE. This line will connect you directly to your US Senator by simply entering your zip code, so it’s the easiest way to reach out.
  2. TELL YOUR FRIENDS. Update your Facebook status, tweet about the experience, upload a video on our YouTube page, whatever you feel moved to do… but please tell your friends you made the call, and ask them to do the same.
  3. TELL SAVE SERVICE ABOUT YOUR CALL: We’ve created a Share page where you can report back on how your call went.

You are a powerful voice for service—please make the call!

Admittedly, I haven’t been involved enough with getting the word out about this effort to save Americorps. But it’s important to me for ya’ll to know that public service — whether in your community or on a national level — is one of the finest things you can do to show your patriotism.

So, I’ll be calling today and if you like what we do here at The Sly, it would mean a great deal to me for you, dear reader, to take ten minutes of your day and make a call to help the cause.
