The Sports Guy’s new digs is named Grantland and will feature writing from Chuck Klosterman, Dave Eggers, Malcolm Gladwell, Katie Baker, Molly Lambert, and others. I wrote a bit more over at Hypervocal on this one. The site debuts in June and will be a sports/pop culture hybrid portal.
Looks like Bill Simmons, who will be the founder and Editor-in-Chief, is going for the classy, literate variety of content — with a mix of long form essays, quick hits and stuff like that. Like The Awl, but for sports.
“We wanted original voices, and we found a bunch of them already. We’re going to take chances, come up with a few premises and ideas that you haven’t seen before, and be consistently entertaining day after day,” Simmons said. “You will never know what to expect when you come to the site – in a good way. That’s our ultimate goal. We will not throw up 100 posts every day. We’ve figured out a way to highlight the best things we publish and make it easier for people who might not have a chance to visit the site more than three or four times a week to find everything they want.”
Gotta say, despite some skepticism and jealousy of not being involved, this feels like a homerun.
