Leaving aside the off-putting cheesy opening and graphics of this video, it’s pretty remarkable to listen to a bunch of teenagers interview old people who were gay growing up in the 1950’s. It’s a remarkable history, if only, because we often don’t think about this or we make the assumption that all gay people were just in the closet and struggling to deal with being straight.
The interviews start around 1:30 in to the video. Could you imagine though? It’s hard enough in 2011 for kids who are gay, as evidenced by the necessity of Dan Savage’s “In Gets Better” project. But, shit, 1950? Damn. [via @WeAreHerePDX]
