Sad news to start the day, but Tony Gwynn — the best pure hitter baseball has witnessed in the last 25 years (perhaps second to Ichiro though when all is said and done) — has been diagnosed with cancer in his salivary glands. No doubt from chewing tobacco. On a personal note, the reason I always chose number 19 to wear playing baseball was out of respect and admiration for Tony Gwynn.
Gwynn ranks 19th in MLB history as a career .338 hitter, and is 18th in hits with 3,141. Aside from that however, he finished his career with 19 straight .300+ seasons and won eight batting titles. He will probably remain the closest player to hit the elusive .400, when he finished the 1994 season (strike-shortened, blah) batting .394.
