Dr. Mengele responsible for a city of Brazilian twins

One of my buddies had this go to insult, he would pull it out whenever his back was against the wall, and every time he used it I would die laughing. He always said it in a sarcastic off-hand way, like “thanks for that Dr. Mengele.” Or “you’re just a regular Mengele aren’t you.” There was something so perverse and disturbing about randomly calling anyone Dr. Josef Mengele – the Nazi Angel of Death.

The real Mengele has become infamous for his disturbing genetic experiments for the Third Reich.

An Argentinian historian is claiming in a new book that Mengele was responsible for the astonishing rate of twins in Candido Godoi, Brazil. Jorge Camarasa makes the claim that Mengele ministered to both humans and livestock of the town during the 1960s under the name Rudolph Weiss in the book Mengele: the Angel of Death in South America.

For years scientists have failed to discover why as many as one in five pregnancies in a small Brazilian town have resulted in twins – most of them blond haired and blue eyed.

But residents of Candido Godoi now claim that Mengele made repeated visits there in the early 1960s, posing at first as a vet but then offering medical treatment to the women of the town.

Shuttling between Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil, he managed to evade justice before his death in 1979, but his dreams of a Nazi master race appeared unfulfilled.

The normal birth rate for twins is 1 out of 80 pregnancies.  [via Reddit]
