Beck’s New Album Isn’t an Album at All

Beck’s next album, ‘Song Reader‘ will be released in December as sheet music to 20 unreleased and unrecorded songs in collaboration with McSweeney’s.

ong Reader is an experiment in what an album can be at the end of 2012—an alternative that enlists the listener in the tone of every track, and that’s as visually absorbing as a dozen gatefold LPs put together. The songs here are as unfailingly exciting as you’d expect from their author, but if you want to hear “Do We? We Do,” or “Don’t Act Like Your Heart Isn’t Hard,” bringing them to life depends on you.

Regardless of Beck’s approach, which hearkens back to the composers of yesteryear, I’m fairly intrigued to see what people do with this. The phrase, “bringing them to life depends on you” practically begs the YouTube generation to make something special out of this, doesn’t it? Check back this December when the sheet music is available for interpretation.
