Amazon lost about $3.2 million on their promo to sell Lady Gaga’s new album, Born This Way, for .99 cents, according to Billboard Business. Figures indicate the company sold some 440,000 copies of the album — each one at a lost of $6.
The general consensus, however, seems to be that Amazon basically took the loss on album sales as an advertisement for their cloud player and Mp3 store. Smart move on their part. It’s hard to imagine them getting this much attention from their target demographic (yes, young people 15-35 who buy Gaga’s new album) by any other means, or for such a small sum of money.
