The Black Lilies – “Where Black Lilies Grow”

I got a chance to check these guys out on Saturday night.  The foursome is made up of two former members of The Everybodyfields (still sad) — Tom Pryor on slide and electric guitar and  Jamie Cook on drums.  The other members of this Knoxville troupe include Cruz Contreras on vocals, guitar and mandolin; Leah Gardner on vocals and guitar; and,  Taylor Coker on upright bass.

When the Knoxville, TN band rolled into Portland they were touring without Leah Gardner.  A shame as her haunting vocals had so much to many of there americana, alt-country vibe.  What I enjoy about this song is how spacey it is, it’s not like anything else in their category and absolutely killed live.

One other thing.  Tom Pryor is perhaps one of the best guitar players I’ve ever heard.  His work with the Everybodyfields was exclusively slide guitar but he tore it up with The Black Lilies.  These guys are definitely a band to keep on your radar if you’re into country music.

I don’t regret giving up a Laura Veirs/Blind Pilot show to see them.  (Thanks Lark for the heads up!)
