Michael Jackson – “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough”

The internet collapsed under the weight of Michael Jackson’s death.  It finally took the passing a super-duper-legend to bring it crashing down upon the world’s heavy hearts.  In a day or two, everyone will move on, but I spent last night watching video clips and highlights of his oft-times tragic yet always cheerfully optimistic life.

Jackson unquestionably made some great albums and musically was last relevant around 1992, but there’s no denying that he made the greatest music video ever and has never vacated his crown.  And while I love “Thriller,” the song that really gets me is “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough.”

It never fails to blow the roof off a party.

If people aren’t dancing, the inevitably do.  That jugging Fraggle Rock bass line opens the song and people poke their heads up wondering if, if, could it be?  Yes! Dear god it is.

Jackson triumphantly shouts “Woooooooooooooooooo!!!” as if beckoning any blood pumping organizing to the dance floor. He is our Pied Piper — it is an impossible song to resist full of cowbells, funky bass and that impossible high refrain begging you to not resist; it’s disco and pop and rock n’roll and hip-hop all rolled into a song so impossibly fantastic, so improbable that it feels like it has always existed like a mathematical equation waiting to be discovered by a mad alchemist.
