Why I Can’t Listen to Elliott Smith

Before reading the deeply personal account of Spin editor Ellen Carpenter’s justification for not being able to listen to Elliott Smith’s music, I was ready to go toe to toe with her. How could you not listen to Elliott Smith?  But afterwards, I realized that Smith’s death had touched a nerve deep within her and having to research his death for the magazine in 2004, well, it’s completely understandable why she wouldn’t be able to put on one of his records.  “They say you should never meet your idols. Nor should you get too intimate with their demons. Today, I can’t separate the songs from the story. Each one is a reminder of how cruel life can be — allowing someone like him, someone with that much talent and heart, to suffer through so much pain for so long.”  [Spin]
