Why do we eat popcorn at the movies? Because popcorn is cheap and the mark-up on profits is extraordinary — same goes with soda and to a certain extant beer and wine. The trend began during the depression, but the lessons for theater owners are just as applicable today. The key to building a profitable theater has nothing to do with the movies, but, rather with all the services you package for people once they come to the theater.
