Last Known Footage of Laurel and Hardy in 1956

This short video is thought to be the last footage of comedians Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. The silent footage was shot in 1956 at the Reseda, Calif. home of Stan Laurel’s daughter, Lois. At this point, Stan had suffered a stroke and Oliver Hardy had lost an incredible amount of weight.

Laurel and Hardy were one of the first, great classic comedy duos from the early era of Hollywood. They pushed the boundaries of visual, slapstick humor throughout their 106 films. They retired in 1951.

It’s almost endearing to see the two friends and partners still performing with each other, even in home movies.

Hardy, who was the chubby one, died in 1957 as a frame of reference for his weight loss.

Not for nothing, but the comedy duo were the genesis of the famous phrase, “D’Oh!” Which, of course, will always now be associated with Homer Simpson. Groening took the phrase from James Finlayson, a Scottish actor that appeared in 33 Laurel and Hardy films; he used the catchphrase regularly. [via dangerousminds]
