Kevin Costner Joining Tarantino’s “Django Unchained”

The slavery western flick already had Jamie Foxx signed on for the slave role, Christopher Waltz as a German bounty hunter, Sam Jackson in an unnamed role and Leo DiCaprio as the plantation owner.

Now Kevin Costner has joined the flick, or is in talks to join, as Ace Woody, who Deadline describes:

the sadistic trainer of the male fighting slaves who entertain the white patrons of Candyland as well as the female slaves who are forced to be prostitutes. The club and ranch are owned by Calvin Candie (DiCaprio) and Ace Woody is the one who pits the “mandingo” fighters against one another, and has little qualms about mistreating and even killing the slaves who don’t measure up.

Here’s the conversation my buddy Ben and I had about the news:

Ben:  tarantino has cast Kevin Costner…I am conflicted
 me:  ha, it’s weird, I know… but I trust Tarantino’s weird casting decisions…
none of his casting decisions should have ever worked on paper…
Ben:  yeah, but none of those people were bad actors
 Ben:  and costner is
me:  excellent counterpoint… Costner is … okay… when not asked to do too much… like that western he was  in Open Range where all he had to do was look constipated and grimace at the camera…
Ben:  field of dreams is damn near painful to watch these days
me: no arguments there. Maybe Tarantino is off his rocker.
