The big screen adaptation of Sara Gruen’s Water for Elephants stars Reese Witherspoon and R-Patz, along with Christopher Waltz and Hal Holbrooke.
And despite my aversion for both Witherspoon and Edward Cullen, this doesn’t look all that bad. Perhaps it’s because the book is held in high esteem, or perhaps because Francis Lawrence is at the helm. Certainly, the capable director of I Am Legend and Constantine, should get points for stepping out of his genre comfort zone.
Veterinary school student Jacob meets and falls in love with Marlena, a star performer in a circus of a bygone era. They discoverbeauty amidst the world of the Big Top, and come together through their compassion for a special elephant. Against all odds — including the wrath of Marlena’s charismatic but dangerous husband, August — Jacob and Marlena find lifelong love.
Sort of evokes Tim Burton’s Big Fish.
