Aronofksy Directing Wolverine 2?

Is this for real?  In an interview with Vulture, Hugh Jackman said, “This is Wolverine. This is not Popeye. He’s kind of dark.  But, you know, this is a change of pace. Chris McQuarrie, who wrote The Usual Suspects, has written the script, so that’ll give you a good clue. [Darren Aronofsky’s] going to make it fantastic. There’s going to be some meat on the bones. There will be something to think about as you leave the theater, for sure.”

According to the IMDB entry, Darren Aronofksy is attached to direct and Chris McQuarrie is the screenwriter, but I’m still trying to wrap my head around this.  Was this big news that I missed at some point?

The log line is that Wolverine travels to Japan to train as a samurai.  I wonder how this will mesh continuity-wise with X2, which had Wolverine square off against Yuriko/Lady Deathstrike, whom he falls in love with during his time in Japan.
