[Trailer] Whip It

I can get down with this apparently lightweight, coming of age dramedy by first-time director Drew Barrymore.  This is probably going to be enjoyable, if utterly forgettable.

Still, roller derby is one of the best things to experience here in Portland, there’s nothing quite like the sight of strong, confident women beating the crap out of each other in an alternative, athletic environment.

And I would imagine many of the girls that participate feel a sense of community and home on the track and with their team that they don’t experience anywhere else in their life.

Based on the book Derby Girl by Shauna Cross, the film stars Ellen Page as Bliss Cavendar, who finds a way of dealing with her small-town misery after she discovers a roller derby league in nearby Austin Texas.

Whip It opens on October 9th.  Could be the perfect antidote to cleanse the palatte of the masochistic macho summer movie season.
