Darren Aronofksy follows up his passion project of the much-maligned, often underrated sci-fi romantic love story The Fountain with a decidedly different turn.? He’s getting down and dirty in the world of professional wrestling with his project The Wrestler.? He enlisted Mickey Rourke to play the aging wrestler with a bum heart who gets into the squared-circle one last time for another shot at glory.
Marisa Tomei will star as? single mom / stripper that Rourke falls in love with.? I’ve gotta say, hiring Rourke to play Randy “The Ram” Robinson was a smart move, especially after seeing this footage where he actually looks like a WWE star.? He eerily resembles Shawn “The Heartbreak Kid” Michaels, and given that the WWE has kept recycling it’s aging wrestlers over the years, this movie might be oddly the scariest movie Aronofsky makes yet.
One caveat, I’m a sucker for the theatrics of wrestling.? Don’t ask me why, but I grew up watching and occassionally I’ve been known to let the remote control slip on over to Raw or Smackdown.? There’s something about it, even if it is patently absurd and for 12-year-olds.? Makes for good drama and this type of drama that Aronofky is putting on is exactly the kind of story that interests me about real life wrestlers.? Why do they keep coming back for more?? For every Hulk Hogan or The Rock, there’s about seven Shawn Michaels or Rick Flairs willing to keep doing it long past the age of 50.
FYI careful of the sound, the guy who recorded this does a lousy job and it’s like fingernails on a chalkboard at first.
