Wolfman’s got nards!

Monster Squad is one of those movies that lets little kids be scared and feel like they’re watching an adult movie even if they probably aren’t.? It was one of the first movies I can remember watching where I felt slightly scared and viscerally thrilled.? It was probably the only “horror” movie my parents would let me watch growing up.

So it came as a surprise to learn that Shane Black was the writer of the film.? Black you may recall is responsible for some of the biggest Hollywood flicks and took the flack for being one of the highest paid screenwriters after the successes of Lethal Weapon, The Last Boy Scout and The Last Action Hero.? If you still haven’t seen Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang well what the hell are you waiting for?? It’s Black’s directorial debut and it was easily one of the best movies from 2006.

The best way to sum up Monster Squad is that Universal’s classic monster lineup – Dracula, Wolfman, Gilman, Frankenstein and The Mummy – gets displaced into a world of contemporary ‘Little Rascals.’? And so when Dracula needs to be stopped it’s clearly up to the band of twelve year olds to stop him.

It was a fun and clever conceit.? Lionsgate is responsible for this flick finally coming to DVD. ? It’ll hit stores on 7/24.
