The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters trailer

Add yet another movie to your radar.  This one is a documentary, that probably won’t get half the love of Michael Moore’s new movie, however, it looks like it’ll be slightly closer to our heart.

Here’s the lowdown on The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters!

It’s about the competition between Billy Mitchell, a mulleted hot sauce mogul, who set a world record in Donkey Kong which went unchallenged for 20 years and Steve Wiebe, a down on his luck middle school science teacher vying to break the world record.

Sounds simple enough and it’s set in the world of classic arcade games!  Check out the trailer at Yahoo Movies.

The documentary has created enough buzz at Slamdance that it’s getting a decent release in theatres on August 17 from Picturehouse Studios.  You can read more about the flick over on MTV, of all places, which has a nice roundup and behind the scenes look at the movie.

Getting a similar treatment to Lords of Dogtown, another documentary turned feature film, New Line Studios has already hired a writer to pen a feature film script version of the movie.  King of Kong director Seth Gordon has been rehired to direct the feature film.

Quint over at AICN seems to think Oysterfave Nathon Fillion would be perfect for the role of underdog hero Steve Wiebe, and after seeing the trailer, we’re intending to agree with that assessment.   Check out Wiebe below.

Doesn’t it? Like a slice of nostalgia pie. Maybe a movie like this will kick start arcades to open back up. Life hasn’t been the same without The Dream Machine…
