Not that we’re about to diss on The Thundercats, since it’s a seminal cartoon from the eighties, but we were always more of a Silverhawks kid (Afterall, they were partly metal, partly real). Still, there’s no denying that awesome shredding of Eddie Van Halen in the Thundercats into.
This morning it broke that Warner Bros. has snatched up a spec script for a live action Thundercats movie. Normally news of this would make us giddy, but to be honest I just don’t think this is something that can be done and done well, or done cheaply for that matter. The makeup and effects alone of converting actors into humanoid cats? Jeeze.
Property revolves around a group of humanoid cats (with feline names like Lion-O, Tygra, Panthro and Cheetara) who must flee their planet of Thundera after it’s destroyed. Once crash-landing on another planet, Third Earth, they must thwart Mumm-Ra, an evil sorcerer, bent on killing them off.
Sopocy has written the script as an origin story expanding on the major heroes and villains from the animated series, with the plot focusing on Lion-O coming of age as the leader of the Thundercats.
One of my roommates recently went out and bought the first season of Thundercats on DVD and it’s not quite as good as we remembered. Still, the big studio effort has got to be better done by these folks.
Does anyone else just feel kinda sad that real live people put their time and energy into this? I mean, don’t get me wrong it’s pretty awesome! But at some point someone shoulda said, “hey we forgot to include Snarf. Let’s just scrap the whole project, it ain’t worth it without Snarf.”
