First look at “Punisher: War Zone”

It’s strange how Marvel has decided to “reboot” several of their franchises.? Acting as if the first movies from Hulk to Punisher just never happened.? I’m not totally against the idea because I think that, in the case of The Incredible Hulk,at least, there is a better movie to be made.

When it comes to the Frank Castle, though, I’m not quite sold.? The first movie was one of the worst Marvel movies ever made and wasted the talents of Thomas Jane, Ben Foster and um… well that’s about it.? The thing is, Jane made a great Frank Castle.? I could see him playing the role over and over again.

But for whatever reason, Jane is out and Ray Stevenson, Titus Pullo from HBO’s Rome, is in, for the sequel directed by Lexi Alexander.? She is responsible for the violence obsessed Girlfight and Green Street Holigans (easily one of the most underrated gems of the past few years and certainly worth renting if you can remember to).? With her at the helm it’s possible a gritty, hard-R Punisher movie could be made.? Not sure if Stevenson is the right guy for the role and the first still from the movie doesn’t inspire confidence.

Anyone else think he looks like Steven Segal circa 1992? That was my immediate thought and that’s never a good thing.? I do like the design of the Punisher skull over the flack jacket.? Now, according to Cinematical (via Slashfilm), this is going to be a brutal film, with about 70% gunplay and 30% hand-to-hand.

Well, the last Punisher movie really wasn’t relevant to us. There’s a lot of comparison to it, but none of the people on my team ever looked at that and said how can we be different or better — we just kind of made our own film. The one thing I concentrated on was to really really make it as close to the MAX series as possible. I think we really achieved it as far as the look, as well as the tone. When I look at the dailies that I’m getting, I seriously feel like I’m looking at a MAX comic book right in front of me.

Also, Alexander said there will be almost zero chance of a Hooligans follow-up, which just makes us sad.

wow, that sucks. I liked the Thomas Jane Punisher. Sure, Travolta hammed the movie up some, but Jane was awesome.
