To be honest we were only mildly intrigued by the new Ben Stiller comedy The Heartbreak Kid. It looked funny enough, on a very Along Came Polly sort of way. But then we payed attention and realized this was a Farrelly Brothers movie. And though they may have fallen out of favor as marque comedy directors in this Judd Apatow world we live in now, their stellar track record speaks for itself. Even their lessor movies, the likes of which include Stuck on You and Fever Pitch have some brilliantly funny moments.
Though the latter finally put the nail in the coffin for Red Sox fans everywhere after the 2004 World Series. We could survive the band wagon fans and all the books and all the stuff co-opting our moment with our team, but we’ll never be able to live down or survive this movie. The worst part about Fever Pitch aside from Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore is that the Farrelly Brothers are retardedly huge Sox fans. Go Figure.
They went 3-3 right out of the gate in terms of comedy classics with Dumb and Dumber, Kingpin and their last effort with Ben Stiller was There’s Something About Mary. I’d argue that their recent “downslide” is indicative of their own huge success and the changing tide of Hollywood trends rather than anything they’ve actually done.
We’ve provided five clips from the upcoming Farrelly Brothers movie, which opens Oct. 5. The Heartbreak Kid stars Ben Stiller, Michelle Monaghan, Jerry Stiller, Carlos Mencia, Rob Corddry and Malin Akerman. No doubt crude hijinks will ensue.
