Wow! Burger King announced they would only purchase and use eggs from cage-free chickens and pork products from pigs not raised in gestation stalls by 2017. They are the largest restaurant chain to pledge this. McDonalds and Wendy’s are reportedly making similar plans to uncage their food sources, but have yet to set an exact date.
The truly interesting part of this story — aside from Burger King doing this — is the chain drawing a distinction between eggs and chickens. Notice that Burger King is not saying they will use cage-free chickens in its sandwiches, just that they will use cage-free eggs. But, whatever. It’s still a step in the right direction.
