Anheuser-Busch to buy Goose Island for $38.8 million

The news that beer giant Anheuser-Busch is going to buy the superb Chicago craft brewer Goose Island is a double-edged sword.

On the one hand, good for those guys. It’s a nice reward and probably a security blanket to know that InBev, the big beer company, is going to help them out through turbulent times and take them national. On the other hand, fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck. Bud Lite just bought Goose Island.

The other interesting piece of news about this announcement, is that brewmaster Greg Hall is stepping down from the Chicago brewery and in his place steps Deschutes Brewery’s Head Brewer, Brett Porter.

Doesn’t seem to be any word out of Oregon as to who is replacing Porter at Deschutes. I don’t know what’s the bigger news here: the buyout or scooping up Porter from Deschutes. He makes some very excellent beers — perhaps the best of the big guys in Oregon.
