According to Mashable, “Air New Zealand is calling the vid a “RichRoll” and positioning itself as the kind of “high-energy airline” that can stand up to a video of this caliber. The spot was produced by .99, Air New Zealand’s chief creative agency.”
Yes, in-flight safety videos could afford to be a little more exciting, passengers know the drill by now so why not regale and entertain rather than instruct? But this spot with a techno-colored Richard Simmons is downright scary. As in, I pray to God my flight crashes somewhere over the Pacific.
Perhaps that has something to do with Richard Simmons being a frightening clown-like persona. I keep waiting for him to reveal himself as a Buffy Big Bad type of demon, ya know?
At the same time, Richard Simmons. How has he not had the sort of internet-revival career that other celebrities have had in recent years. If anyone is ripe to parody themselves for the benefit of internet fame and glory, wouldn’t Richard Simmons be at the top of the list?
