Out on Oahu’s famed Waimea Beach, for the first time in five years the waves were big enough to hold the prestigious Eddie Aikau big wave surfing contest. The contest was supposed to happen a few days ago, but the waves never materialized above the 20-feet threshold.
They finally did on Tuesday and San Clemente, California’s Greg Long won the event by riding the “monster drop” of the day, a 40-foot wave that broke during the competition’s final heat. There are a ton of awesome photos in which you can gawk at the magesterial size fo these waves.
