First off, no, this new type of book — known as a flipback book — that started in Holland and will be making its way to England is not a “Kindle Killer.” That a journalist would even use that term is obnoxious and indicative of the worst kind of technology writing.
It is all the rage in Holland, where it was introduced in 2009, and has since sold 1m copies. A version has just been launched in Spain, France is next, and the flipback reaches UK shores in June, when Hodder & Stoughton will treat us to a selection of 12 books. They cost £9.99, and will include David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas and Stephen King’s Misery.
The books are made with bible-thin paper and are designed to be read with one hand. With that said, it’s nice to see someone in the book industry taking the traditional forms of the media and updating it for the times we live in.
