RIP: Robert B. Parker, 1932-2010

What led me to read many of Boston-based mystery novelist Robert B. Parker’s “Spenser” mysteries was the Robert Ulrich television show Spenser for Hire.  I think I was home from college or something and my dad was on vacation from work; he would watch all these mystery shows in the middle of the afternoon and somehow, despite my best efforts I got hooked and found myself watching them alongside him.

Spenser, the tv show, was good enough to make me seek out the much better book series from Mr. Parker.  He died yesterday at the age of 77.

Also: Canadian folk singer Kate McGarrigle, passed away at 63; and, country music legend Carl Smith (June Carter’s former husband) died at 82.
