Moving tribute to Elliott Smith

Elliott Smith was a quiet and shy person, humble even. But he could write and sing like few of his contemporary musicians. He was a testament to how one man and a guitar could move the world. When he died in 2003 after committing suicide there were many people who mourned his passing by scribbling notes of love, poems, remembrances on what has become known as The Elliott Smith Memorial Wall in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles.

Smith had once posed in front of the red and black swirling mural for the cover of his 2000 album Figure 8. Over time the wall has become what Strawberry Fields is for John Lennon fans.

Recently this memorial has become defaced be graffiti and the city of Los Angeles had done nothing about it. Not like that’s all that surprising. This is something that would only concern those who were deeply moved by the gracefulness that was Smith’s music.

Afterall, Smith was probably best known to the public at large for contributing a few songs to the Goodwill Hunting Soundtrack, but he was so much more.

However, the defacing of the memorial was the last straw for several writers over at the Laist (here, here, here, here). Thankfully their disgust with what happened to the wall, led to an even more touching memorial, as several Smith fans and artists came out to clean up the mural and restore it (even created a Mypace page to stay updated).

Even though the remembrances and poems and the outpouring of affection for Elliott are gone, fans (and to be sure I count myself as one of them) will be able to start anew.

The owner of Electronic Solutions, located at 4334 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, where the mural is located, has even announced plans to create an actual memorial for Smith in front of the mural. In a comment on the original article, Stephen Law original owner of Electronic Solutions and designer of the mural, which he called a “figure S” has said this about his plans:

Let me clarify some rumours….
These are my dreams: I plan to place an electronic object of importance….a 5 foot 7 inch tall monument (of Elliott’s size–with two loudspeakers at the base of the monument to represent his two big shoes) formed from crushed electronics parts —to play and to identify Elliott’s musical influences (Elliott’s hobby, I hear, was to experiment with electronics to make music tone)—to have the monument –emanate new energy and the many solutions that music can provide.

I will present the statue-monument as “Art in-front-of Art”—at where Elliot stood for the Figure 8 album cover photo— Many fans have promised to help me complete this in due time…after next winter, perhaps…..I plan, with the help of Elliott’s fans…, to also place along the two foot ground area in front of the Wall…. a removable display (video or otherwise) of all his lyrics—not placed on the vertical Wall— but at the ground base…somehow…..and those of the Beatles or other music groups that influenced Elliott —-I hope that when one visits the Wall Area, we all will just smile.. ..and walk away with the happiest of an ice-cream-type closure—- to be able to take with you more of Elliott’s true vibrations and the beauty of other bands’ music —. This is just a dream. –Thank you! Stephon

As it should be! If you live in LA or are in the neighborhood, stop by and pay your respect for Elliott Smith.

I don’t know why, but this fan made video of the scribblings on the wall set to Smith’s song “Between the Bars” almost made me cry.

Iron Man - trailer #2

ironmanmach3.jpg

Pretty much everyone I know has three movies they are dying to see this summer: The Dark Knight, Wall-E and Iron Man. Most everything we’ve seen from Jon Favreau’s Iron Man has been outstanding. It looks as if he’s nailed the character.

I will posit that after seeing this trailer, Iron Man has just become my most anticipated movie of the summer. This trailer just straight nails it.

Iron Man blasts its way into theaters May 2.

Coldplay working on something different

coldplay.jpg

Coldplay are hard at work on their fourth studio effort with producer Brian Eno.  They’re promising it’s going to be “something different” which may mean different from the sorta okay rock tunes we’ve heard from them in the past and more closely like the sounds of U2.

We kid.

To record their fourth album, the band hired legendary producer Brian Eno and pointedly tried to remove all outside influences. “We felt like the first three albums were a trilogy, and we finished that,” says guitarist Johnny Buckland. “So we wanted to do something different.” The band let Rolling Stone hear the songs they’re working on, and most are refreshingly, bracingly different from Coldplay hits like “Clocks” and “Speed of Sound.”

Several tracks are considerably rougher around the edges, with distorted guitars and more prominent percussion. The lyrics are darker, dealing with recurring themes of death and loneliness. And on several songs, Martin extends his vocal palette considerably beyond the falsetto that has largely defined him, exhibiting a lower, sexier mode that feels more personal and real. “Whether or not it’s good, we certainly started to use more colors,” says Martin. “It’s impossible to please everybody, and it took us a while to learn that. It’s just the freedom to say, ‘Everyone might not like this. We’re into it at the moment, so let’s just get it done.’ “

Whether or not that means it’ll be good to great is a story for another day.  Lots of songs open with jagged guitar riffs, electro dance loops or weepy piano chords; there’s even a song with Afro-pop influences.  Somewhere Vampire Weekend is saying to back off our shit, and somewhere even further Paul Simon has thrown up in his mouth.

The entire article has a look at which songs will appear on the new album.  How much do you want to bet Coldplay offers a “pay what you want” for their new album and nobody cares?

The Cougar and the King team up for a musical

cougarking.jpg

John “The Cougar” Mellencamp and horror icon Stephen King have teamed up to produce the musical Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, which is set to open in Atlanta circa April 2009.

According to Billboard:

Mellencamp wrote the score, while King wrote the script. Mellencamp previously said the play, which is set in Lake Belle Reve, Miss., in 1957, is about “two brothers; they’re 19 years old or 20, maybe 18 or 21, who are very competitive and dislike each other immensely. The father takes them to the family vacation place, a cabin that the boys hadn’t been to since they were kids.”

“What has happened is that the father had two older brothers who hated each other and killed each other in that cabin,” he continued. “There’s a confederacy of ghosts who also live in this house. The older [dead] brothers are there, and they speak to the audience, and they sing to the audience.

“Ghost Brothers” will be directed by Peter Askin (”Hedwig and the Angry Inch”), who hopes to prep the production for an eventual Broadway run.

Mellencamp also told Billboard that King is “the sweetest guy you could ever meet; there’s nothing weird about him or demonic or anything like that.”

Always gives me faith when the plot is that convoluted.   There are some ghosts and they’re dead in a cabin somewhere and then they sing.  You know cause that’s scary.

Anyway, do you suppose it’s as scary as Oooooooouuuuuuurrrrrrrr Country?

Step Brothers trailer

stepbrothersposter.jpgAnother summer another goofy Will Ferrell comedy. But unlike his other recent movies where he’s playing an insecure pompous douche, his new team up with John C. Reilly has us excited. They both play manchildren, who become step brothers when their single parents become married.

It looks funny, since you’d normally expect this sort of thing to happen with 10 year olds, but it also looks kinda sweet. That they’re rocking LCD Soundsystem in the trailer doesn’t hurt either.

Step Brothers is directed by Adam McKay. Everything McKay and Ferrell have done together so far, including their stints on SNL, have at the very least had inspiring moments of comedy. This looks no different.

Neil at Film School Rejects has read the script for Ferrell’s upcoming comedy, Step Brothers, and insists that it is hilarious.

John C. Reilly should do more comedy, I think that we can all agree upon. He’s got the touch.

New Get Smart trailer

This summer’s Get Smart starring Steve Carrell, Anne Hathaway (let me just say I watched a bit of The Princess Diaries the other night and her hotness could not have been predicted.  In this trailer she’s a total sex bomb), Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Alan Arkin and the fat guy from Borat.

This new trailer shows a bit of promise and this could become a sleeper hit of the summer.  It’ll make for some nice counter programming to the flurry of superhero movies we’ll be seeing.  Director Peter Segal’s new trailer premiered last weekend at WonderCon in San Francisco.

Help celebrate Mr. Rogers with a sweater

For a lot of people, it wasn’t just Seasame Street that made an impact on their lives at a young age.  There was also Mr. Rogers soothing voice teaching us to tie our sneakers and welcoming us to his neighborhood.  But thinking back on it, that show was crazy with the magical puppet world in his closet.

The children’s public television icon died a few years ago from cancer, but the City of Pittsburgh is trying to commemorate his life by asking people to wear sweaters on March 20, otherwise known as his 80th birthday.

Mister McFeeley, oddly his real name and stranger still he’s still alive and even stranger still that was a bad name for a character on a children’s television show about a smooth talking guy who welcomes children into his home to see his magical train set in his closet.  Just saying, they might have wanted to reconsider that one.

Regardless, we’re sweatering up on March 20th in memory of Mister Rogers.  Because after all won’t you be my neighbor?  That was a seriously good show intro.

R.I.P. Buddy Miles

Buddy Miles was one of the sickest drummers to ever play. He died yesterday of unknown causes at the age of 60 in his home of Austin, Texas. Miles was best known as drummer for Jimi Hendrix’s Band of Gypsys.

From BuddyMiles.com:

It is with tremendous sadness that we must share with all Buddy’s fans around the world that Buddy passed away peacefully and quietly at his home last night (Tuesday, February 26, 2008) in Austin, Texas surrounded by his family. Buddy will be greatly missed as a wonderful person and as a truly gifted musician who gave so much to so many through the years.

The family ask for your prayers and that you respect their privacy. A tribute show will be announced within a short period of time and all are welcome to come and share in the magic that was Buddy Miles.

Fans, friends and family will all join in a celebration of the life and music of this talented and big hearted musician, so we hope everyone can be a part of this fond farewell.

He will be missed.

Shinermon Games folds into Treasure Trail Games

Way way back we did a cool interview with an independent board game maker, Colin Leamon, who hails from Cornwall, U.K.  It was a strange chance encounter, but that’s what doing this blog is all about.  Anyway, in the interview Colin admitted that his game company Shinermons Games would probably go out of business if he couldn’t sell some games or find a company to buy him out.

Happily, we have a great update.  Shinermons Games has been bought by Treasure Trails Games, with our good pal Colin as their director.  See look an email from the man himself:

Yes, it’s a great step forward for me! Shinermons Games has closed down and I am now the director of a company that has the finances, marketing and design professionalism to take me further in a couple months than I managed in a couple years! We (TTGS) now have a 8 week trail run of a newspaper puzzle that in its first week got more response than their crossword. Its called Crosstrails; you heard it here first!

As for the future: Well, on May 31-June 1st Treasure Trail Games are going to the UK Games Expo to exhibit our wear, but at the moment its so hectic all I can hope for is a couple games – ‘Get-it’, a garden game, not to sure on the name -  and a great game I did in 20 minutes! A eureka moment I’m calling Shout 7, that has all the makings of a classic. Exciting times!

Can’t wait to see what Colin comes up with and as always we wish him the best.  If you’re looking for a board game you could do much worse than buying one of Colin’s games.  Much, much worse.  They’re classy and challenging and unique., a rarity in today’s board gaming world.

Jeff Mangum - music’s J.D. Salinger

neutral_milk_hotel.jpg

Slate has an interesting piece, that’s old news to music lovers, but is nonetheless about Neutral Milk Hotel mastermind Jeff Mangum. Mangum and his band recorded the now legendary album In the Aeroplane Over the Sea a proper decade ago. The album is revered by many (so much so that The ‘Gum refused to do a tribute album for it) and it’s noteriety stems as much from its genius as from Mangum walking away and never being heard from again.

It’s almost as if Jeff Mangum accomplished everything he wanted to with his musical homage to Anne Frank, or simply that he
