The next two weeks

Well, it’s officially here.  Tomorrow morning I’ll be shipping off to Portland, OR.  I’m retardedly excited for the move, almost like when Corky passed his driver’s test or dressed up like Flava Flav for Halloween one year.

It’s gonna take two weeks to get out there and hopefully, internet access willing, I should be able to put up some photos of the adventure, so long as I don’t die at any point along the Oregon Trail.

It’s a possibility, what with Indians attacking the conestogas and all.  Wait, you mean there are no covered wagons!  Jes-sus!  How do they expect us to ward off dysentary and malaria and typhoid and we can’t fjord the river without a wagon?!?

I think I bit off more than I can chew, but like a wise man, more famous than myself once said, “Becca ob-la-di-bla-dah.”  Which roughly translates from the Sioux language to be “it’ll all work out in the end and it’ll be exciting just to get there.”

Until next time folks.

I love the sound of a walrus dying in the morning.

This will definitely be pumping about 30 times in the next two weeks, probably after my 10th Red Bull, when I’ve soaked through my T-shirt for the seventh time or when I’m trying to will my car on E to the next service station 62 miles away.

See ya’ll on the other side of the country.

New Pietasters album + tour

There are some things in life I just won’t apologize for. I won’t budge an inch about finding Jewel’s snaggle tooth oddly attractive, nor will I balk at downright loving ska. And not the first wave with the likes of Desmond Dekker or even the second wave revival featuring the unscrupulous behavior of Madness or The Specials. You see, the first and second waves are easy to enjoy.

I’m talking about the third wave when it seemed to crest like something Kelly Slater would ride in the glorious summer of 1997. It was then that everything synchronized for bands with loyal followings like Rancid (still basking in the Operation Ivy love), The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and No Doubt and Sublime and Reel Big Fish and they were all over the radio 24-7.

Dorks like me argued about the relative merits of East Coast, punk-infused ska from Jersey versus the bouncy, sunshiney, horn-driven bands from the West Coast, predominantly Anaheim. Was there anything better than diving into the obscure bands from either coast, bands that you haven’t heard of since. Count’em off: Less Than Jake, Hepcat, The Toasters, Skank’n'Pickle, Mustard Plug, The Aquabats, and The Pietasters.

Ten years later, most of those bands are no longer around, crashing into the surf like a bad wipeout. Some, but very few, are still chugging along. But there’s something about listen to skiffle and horns and the uniting of rocksteady, reggae, soul, rock and punk into some glorious bastion of good times and political consciousness.

In fact, if you could see me, I’m wearing plaid pants right now. (On a side note, Dicky Barrett get your act together and get the band back together would you?) The Pietasters are one band that has not only kept chugging along, but they’ve managed to not be defined by the dreaded “ska” label and only come out better on the other side.

After a five year hiatus, they’re back with a new album All Day, produced by Todd Harris (he’s worked with James Brown). The D.C. lads, consisting of Stephen Jackson on lead vocals, Jorge Pezzimenti on bass, guitar, keyboards and vocals, Toby Hansen on guitar, Alan Makranczy on saxophone and melodica, Jeremy Roberts on trombone, Carlos Linares on trumpet, Jon Darby on keyboards and Rob Steward on drums, have crafted a record I could listen to for the majority of the day. Not all day, sorry, but it’s a diverse affair that makes the songs difficult to tire on, because the album isn’t really a ska album, per say.

Now we could go into The Pietasters past decade, from getting dropped by labels (ending up on Fueled By Ramen for their 2002 release), to the death of their original bass player in 2001, to James Brown tapping them for a stint as his backing band, but really that’s all just histrionics (see how clever we are by actually giving you a taste of their past decade?). What you really wanna hear about is their new music any good? In a word - hell yes!

From the opening track “Change My Ways” which sounds like something from Berry Gordy era Motown, with the song’s sound steeped in shoutout harmonies, crescendo horns and that gentle rolling guitar. Then you get something with a little bit of skank to it. Nothing aggressive but a delicate skank on “Don’t Wanna Know.”

All Day manages to reintroduce audiences to all the wonderful influences that shaped the third wave of ska, but it never seems derivative. This is an album that wears its influences proudly on its sleeve, but rather than come off staid, this new collection of tunes from the ‘Tasters seems as fresh and easy on the ears as one would expect from the D.C. outfit.

The middle of the album begins to lose steam with several songs sounding similar, but by the time “Fozzy (Part 1)” kicks in they’ve managed to deliver something else entirely. It’s got this funky guitar line straight from the Stax-era, punctuated by hard-hitting horns. “So Long” pays tribute to punk rock.

The true misfire on the record, and it’s hardly a misfire is their cover of Tom Petty’s “Listen to Her Heart.” They’ve slowed it down into a reggae version and it’s not bad, you just expect more from The Pietasters. You sort of wish they had no included the song on the album. No doubt it’s a song that probably brings the house down in concert, it’s just it seems out of place on the record. It’s never a good thing when you think “I know this song. What song is this? Oh yeah it’s a Tom Petty song. Damn I wish I were listening to Petty’s version.”

Regardless, All Day is exquisite work from the band. Music lovers should be thankful that they’ve survived the ska-purge of 1998, when radio and record companies managed to erase the wonderment of 1997 from our memories. That shouldn’t have happened. It’s great to have The Pietasters back with one of those easy-going beach or party records, one that will last much, much longer than the collective love for ska we all shared a decade ago.

It’s rich kids looking daft and doing nothing

For those that care.  MTV has brought you more rich kids acting retarded and being like, all dramatic!  Anyway, if Laguna Beach and The Hills weren’t bad enough here comes Newport Harbor: The Real Orange County.

Truth be told, after watching the trailer for the show, which aired it’s first episode last night at 10:30 and will air every Wednesday at the same Bat time and same Bat Channel, I kinda wish we could have a show about the fake Orange County back.   Attempt numero tres is freakin’ lame.

Lotus fall tour dates announced

Leave the glow sticks and fancy Roxy threads at home, but definitely bring your white man’s overbite and dance kicks. Philly five-piece Lotus have just announced their fall tour dates to bring the latest grooves off of Escaping Sargasso Sea to a club near you.

Hard to believe these guys met at a Mennonite college, but wherever they met there’s no denying the vibes of their experimental, funky, jazzy-math rock, disco fusion. Sometimes it’s a little too trancy and you end up zoning out or wishing they would play a new song, but regardless, that’s the chance you take when you plunk down money to see any band strut their stuff live. And boy do these guys bring it. You’ll be dancing and sweating your ass of in no time.

If you like LCD Soundsystem or even Daft Punk, then be sure to hit up Lotus this fall. The band’s comprised of Steve Clemens on drums, Jesse Miller on bass and samples, Luke Miller on guitar and keys, Chuck Morris on electronic and acoustic percussion and finally, Mike Rempel on guitar.

New Go! Team video - “Doing It Right”

With their new video, The Go! Team bring the party vibe back.  Not that we didn’t appreciate the Black Panther Party aesthetic of “Grip Like a Vice” but some bands just need to keep out of politics and keep themselves at the forefront of the party.

This time around we get more of the in-your-face, technocolor bombast and much love for guitarist Kaori Tsuchida who takes the vocals on the chorus.  All the while she’s dressed up like the cutest Asian cowgirl you’ll ever meet.  Say it with me now - Awwww.

Update: No Kristen Bell on ‘Lost’

So actress Kristen Bell won’t be joining the cast of Lost next season. Lindelof and Cuse officially offered her the part of Charlotte, but Bell turned them down. Apparantly the idea of relocating to Hawaii to join the ensemble cast for the best show on television was too much for Bell.

There are rumors flying everywhere that she’ll be appearing on Broadway in Legally Blond starting in February. Which, I suppose you’ve got to follow your heart and all, but still. It would have been a great marriage, especially because Lindelof and Cuse have been extremely gracious to actors/actresses that want to leave the show. Most of the cast seem to come and go as they please, with the exception of the major island players.

There’s no doubt Bell could have come in filmed her parts, gone back to LA to do film work or even New York to do Broadway. Either way, here’s hoping Kristen Bell ends up doing some work sometime soon. We miss her already.

Update: Bell can be seen next in the upcoming film Fanboys.

The Weekend Catch

Hey everybody.  I woke up this morning and the first thought I had was that Au Revoir Simone was playing tonight at TT’s, and then my next thought was aw crap I missed Fountains of Wayne last Thursday night when they played a free show at Copley Square and then I realized I missed last nights Tokyo Police Clubs show at The Middle East.

And you can imagine how much that ruined my morning, and I wasn’t able to get back to sleep.  I’ve been wanting to see TPC for awhile now and things just haven’t been working out.  I’m in the process of moving to Portland, OR and seeing as  I haven’t done anything for it yet, well you can imagine the week I’m about to have.

So without further ado, some headlines to chew over this morning.

- Speaking of Tokyo Police Club they premiered the fourth video from their seven song EP Lessons in Crime.  Yup, it’s that good, even a year later it’s amazing how great the album is.  Anyway, this time they enlisted Kyle Davidson to take on their song “Citizens of Tomorrow.”  It’s got a creepy futuristic kidnapping plot and mind control thing going on.

- Karl Rove is stepping aside as White House Chief Advisor and Senior Counsel.  He’s been mum on future plans, outside of spending time with his family, but word on the street seems to indicate he’s going to become the Galactic Emporer’s new Sith Lord.

- Mitt Romney was able to convince a bunch of Iowan’s that he’s the best Republican candidate to run for President.   But, that just mostly had to do with none of the other candidates showing up for the Ames Straw Poll.  Seems like we’re going to have a Democratic President in 09 more and more.

- The creator of Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune has passed away.  The LA Times has an outstanding obituary for the late Merv Griffin.

- Yeah, yeah, this year marks the 50th anniversary for the publication of Jack Kerouac’s On the Road.  It used to be our favorite book waaay back in the day as in like five years ago, but now we’re not so sure how we feel about it.  Regardless, our curiosity has been piqued as this Thursday Viking Books will publish the original scroll to own.  I’d love to do a side by side comparison, if for nothing more than to dispell the myth that Kerouac never rewrote.  The two versions are remarkably different.

- Peter Jackson may be getting back to directing The Hobbit for New Line, though he may also just be involved artistically as a producer.  We’re not really sure, but the supposed fallout between Jackson and New Line’s honcho Bob Shaye could be thawing out.  Only time will tell.

- Chris Noth will be suiting up for the Sex and the City movie as Mr. Big.  Anyone care?  Anyone?  Anyone?!?

- Continuing the trend of Saturday morning cartoon movies, they’re all the rage these days with Voltron, He-Man, Transformers, et al., Paramount has gone and hired Steven Sommers, who you may remember from the crapfest known as Van Helsing, to direct G.I. Joe.  No word on actors involved or script development, as this is pretty early in pre-production.

- The lads from Oasis have got some new material coming out sometime this year.  It’ll be a DVD of their most recent world tour.

- This Saturday, if you’re in Boston be sure to swing down to Cambridge for this year’s Arts Fest.  There’ll be a Taste of Cambridge from some great digs and tons of great music to rock out to.

- Tops at the box office this weekend was Rush Hour 3.  Still, it was considered a bomb as it only raked in about $50 mil.

- Lone Survivor by a former Navy SEAl Marcus Luttrell sounds like an amazing read.  I couldn’t even do it justice, you’ll just have to swing over to NPR to find out what it’s all about.  Needless to say, he was shot several times after his squad was ambushed in the ‘Stan by Taliban fighters.  He even questions whether the US should be following the rules of war when the enemy isn’t playing by them.  Sounds like a great counter argument to all the people who insiste we follow the Geneva Conventions to the T.  Still not sure I have an opinion since I’ve never served in the military.

Sunday trailer roundup

Before you get ready to watch Tiger Woods win yet another major, or watch some NASCAR or get outside and enjoy the sunny weather - although if you’re down South it might be too freakin’ hot - as always these are the trailers that managed to capture our attention this week, for good or bad.

Resident Evil: Extinction

It’s almost unfathomable how the Resident Evil franchise, has been, well, franchised. The first movie was bad, the second one badder. And this third one looks, let’s just say that the trailer does nothing to make us want to see the movie or make us forget just how terrible the first two movies were.

Be Kind Rewind

Michel Gondry is back with his third feature film. After the brilliance of “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and the strange yet compelling “Science of Sleep” we’ll get down with anything Gondry does. His passion for filmmaking, and it seems like in general is evident in everything he does. This time around he’s got Jack Black and Mos Def as bumbling video store owners who, because of odd circumstances, must recreate all the erased videos in their store. Turns out their homemade versions of classics like “Robocop” or “Ghostbusters” are more popular than the originals. Can’t wait to see them do “Boyz N the Hood.”

Lars and the Real Girls

The entire real girl doll phenomena creeps me out. But with this kind of pedigree, including Ryan Gosling and Emily Mortimer, the story of a hapless socially inept man who falls in love with a doll could be the kind of sweet natured, off-beat comedy that movie goers embrace whole heartedly. Besides, if for nothing else, maybe we’ll get to see Ryan Gosling give his doll a mustache ride. I’m totally growing a ’stache like him.

Dan in Real Life

Steve Carell in a family comedy. He’s a widower who falls in love with his brother’s girlfriend. Dane Cook is said brother and we know he’s kind of annoying but maybe all the quality actors involved with help ease that annoyance. Juliette Binoche is the sexy temptress. We’ll probably see this flick since we have a soft spot for these kinds of family/romantic comedies. Even if we never want to here “Let My Love Open a Door” again in a trailer. A moratorium must be declared.

Resurrecting the Champ

At some point Josh Hartnett is going to come into his own as an actor. We’re not sure which kind of actor he wants to be, but he seems like he has a hard time deciding whether he wants to be a matinée idol or a serious actor. This time around he’s playing a sports journalist looking to make a name for himself. Sam Jackson stars as a homeless dude (who sounds an awful lot like Dave Chappelle’s Tyrone Biggums) who may or may not have been a former boxing champ. Intrigued to see how this one plays out and surprised we haven’t heard much about this film.

Reservation Road

Not to be confused with the Sam Mendes directed, Kate Winslet and Leo DiCaprio starring movie “Revolutionary Road.” This one has Joaquin Phoenix, Jennifer Connelly, Mark Ruffalo and Mira Sorvino in a serious drama about two families ripped apart in the aftermath of a hit-and-run accident. Looks like pretty gripping stuff from director Terry George, who you may remember rocked it with “Hotel Rwanda.” Look for this to be in consideration come Oscar time, if for nothing else than in the acting categories.

Gina Gershon sex tape

With the subtitle: “How to create a perfect marketing campaign for a movie few people have heard of or will go see.”

Full disclosure time.  This tape is obviously fake, and obviously a genius marketing ploy from the people behind the movie Delirious.  Otherwise we wouldn’t be talking about it now.
The director and creative team behind the flick invited Gershon to a hotel room under the clever ruse of shooting promo material for the film.  But once there they ambush her into making a porno with star Luke Van Damn.  The rest is classic give and take between Gershon and director Tom DiCillo.

Oh yeah, there is a movie as well, which also stars Steve Buscemi, Michael Pitt and Allison Lohman.  Buscemi is a paparazzi photographer, who befriends a homeless kid.  That homeless kid ends up putting the moves on a pop star.  Of course, Buscemi becomes jealous and attempts to get even!  Hijinks and hillarity ensue, no doubt!

If you’re at work, turn the speakers down or plug in some headphones, as several F-Bombs get dropped. (via Cinematical)

Latest vid from Eef Barzelay

You may remember Mr. Barzelay and his oddly pitched voice from such bands as Clem Snide. Their brand of alt-country pop seemed to jell under the weight of Barzelay’s quirky lyrics and instantly recognizable voice.

For his latest, the lad has gone solo to contribute the song “I Love the Unknown” to the soundtrack for Rocket Science. The movie is another one of those oddball, coming of age stories. We’re hoping it’s worth the admission since we’re a sucker for these types of whimsical high school movies, being former outcasts and awkward teenagers and all. This time around our hero is a stuttering member of the debate team, who only joins to win the girl of his dreams.

Hijinks and hillarity ensue, no doubt. We’ve heard this one is a winner though as it premiered during Sundance back in January.

The vid has Barzelay acting like the teacher you always wished you’d had back in those halcyon days of acne, forced participation in sports and lots o’ Natty Light. Good times, good times. We just wish there was a Ginny when we were in high school…

Anyhow, the soundtrack features mostly original compositions from Barzelay, with a few Violent Femme tunes and a coupla other random tracks.

Rocket Science the Soundtrack is available now from Lakeshore Records. Rocket Science the movie possibly hits a theater near you today as it’s only out in limited. (via Stereogum)

CMJ announces initial lineup

CMJ is a publication based down in NYC and every year they hold a week long musical showcase focussing on some of the finest up and coming bands from around the world.  It’s a veritable musical smorgasbord.  Their focus is really college and indie music, whether it’s rock or hip-hop.

The music showcase takes place all over the city’s myriad clubs and theaters.  And unlike a lot of other music festivals, the biggest acts on the bill tend to be say, Spoon.  Biggest enough to have a huge following, get mainstream press, even make a splash on th charts, but not big enough where a majority of people have heard of them or are familiar with them.

This year, the music and movie showcase will be held from Oct. 16-20.  The first slate of bands have been released.  Start making your reservations now, start calling in sick to work, start hitting up friends and connections for couches to sleep on and tix to the hottest shows and parties.

It’s a mixed bag, but there’s lots of like from this list.  Also, consider that this is just the first announcement and more will come, as generally there’s about two bagillion acts throughout the week.
