Everyone’s got AIDS!

Well, not everyone. But it’s no secret that Africa has the highest number of people living with HIV or suffering from AIDS. Now Gambia’s president, Yahya Jammeh, has openly admitted he has discovered a cure for AIDS, which consists of an herbal green paste, bananas and some sort of bitter drink.

That sound you hear is the sound of skeptical eyebrows being raised in all corners of the world, but mostly at the World Health Organization.

“Whatever you do, there are bound to be skeptics, but I can tell you my method is foolproof,” President Yahya Jammeh told an Associated Press reporter, surrounded by bodyguards in his presidential compound. “Mine is not an argument, mine is a proof. It’s a declaration. I can cure AIDS and I will.”

The cure is free of charge to Gambians, but it requires them to stop taking their anti-viral medications - a move which would seriously jeopardize their already weakened immune systems.

And this from the World Health Organization’s Dr. Antonio Filipe Jr.:

WHO’s Filipe was diplomatic about Jammeh’s claims, saying his organization respects the president’s point of view. But, he added: “As the World Health Organization, we would like to state quite clearly the following — No. 1: so far there is no cure for AIDS.”

It’s understandable that the Gambian president would want to provide hope to his countrymen when so often there is very little. This pandemic should be considered a genocide. Sure the deaths of millions are not being sanctioned by governments, not like they are in the Sudan, but it’s evident that scientists have the ability to stem the tide of AIDS and HIV and at the very least educate people to curb the spread of this disease.

After all, it shouldn’t just be Magic Johnson who gets to prolong his life. Even if he is one of the top 5 NBA players of all-time. Okay, so maybe that’s a good excuse as any. But shouldn’t people in Africa have that same opportunity? And I’m not going out on a limb by saying the cure isn’t going to come from a green herbal paste and bananas.

Batman Begins again

Only this time, barring a name change, Bruce Wayne will return to Gotham in “The Dark Knight.” Scripted by Jonathan Nolan and directed by Christopher Nolan, the sequel to the well-regarded “Batman Begins” starts production in April, according to the LA Daily News.

In a brief interview with the paper, Nolan says the movie is in the intense pre-production stage, but will start lensing sometime in April.

This is good news for fans of the very serious and dour “Batman Begins.” Though details of the plot are being held tightly in check we do know that Heath Ledger is going to show up as The Joker and Aaron Eckhart was recently cast as DA Harvey Dent. We’ll miss Billy Dee Williams, life just ain’t the same without him. Also Katie Holmes is rumored to be out after not being able to reach a deal with Warner Brothers. Could Maggie Gyllenhaal replace her?

Here’s to hoping and that the sequel treads into the canonical/cult territory of “The Long Halloween.” Though it would be difficult to base the entire sequel around this comic series, I have the utmost faith in the Nolan brothers to cherry pick and fashion something truly remarkable.

New insurgent strategy in Iraq?

While most newstations are eagerly reporting the hell out of the Anna Nicole Smith story (Yes, the judge is crazy. Yes, no one knows who the real father is. Yes Anna Nicole Smith is still, in fact, dead.) or the fact that Britney Spears has entered the hallowed “Mike Tyson Zone” of craziness (thanks Bill Simmons), it seems that the inurgency in Iraq (yes, you may remember it as the country where our troops are fighting) have used anti-aircraft missiles for the first time since the summer of 2006.

Back on Feb. 7 a US Marine helicopter was struck down and all seven Marines on board died. Though the original story was buried beneath the hoopla surrounding what should have been considered less important news stories, according to the Washington Post (via MSNBC) an investigation into the military tragedy found that the helicopter was blown up from Sunnis using “sophisticated SA-14 or SA-16 shoulder-fired missile.”

It appeared that the missile used was not the Vietnam-era SA-7, which insurgents and militias are known to have, but more likely an SA-14 or SA-16. Those pose a bigger threat because they have greater range, size and ability to overcome aircraft defensive systems. The helicopter’s defensive system did not appear to deploy properly, the Marine Corps commandant, Gen. James T. Conway, testified before the Senate last week. The Russian-manufactured SA-14 or SA-16 probably would have been brought into the country from abroad relatively recently.

The latest in a string of attacks against US aircraft has shown the enemy to be more patient, better armed, more prepared and also willing to change their strategy on the ground.  I’m not going to argue that an escalation in US troops is the answer but since no one in the Democratic Party has put forth an alternative plan and with the announcement this morning that Britain is withdrawing a portion of their troops from Basra it’s time for the Democrats or Republicans to grow a backbone and come up with a new strategy for our troops both in Iraq and at home.  Sending more troops to Iraq will only put more troops live’s at risk.  It’s not an answer to the quagmire Iraq has become.

Mammoth teeth proves a big discovery

A Florida teenager stumbled upon the fossils of a prehistoric Mammoth while taking pictures at Boca Ciega Millenium Park. According to the report on MSNBC (via AP) the 16-year-old mistook the football sized tooth for human bones.

Paleontology and archaeology experts have confirmed the find, and recent digging at the site has turned up teeth and bones from a second mammoth, giant sloths, camels, turtles with shells up to 6-feet-long, saber-toothed cats and giant armadillos the size of Volkswagen Beetles. Scientists believe the remains are between 10,000 and 100,000 years old.

If you’re scoring at home that’s approximately 5,000 years older than the creation of the planet, according to the Bible. Now I’m not saying that evolution is in fact correct since science is no more a matter of faith than religion is, but for those basing the history of the Earth on the estimates of the Bible it might be time to update the ole’book. I don’t understand why this isn’t common practice. Wouldn’t it make sense to have Bible 2.0 and just constantly publish updates for the book as seen fit? I think this could be a good idea.

Wine Contest: Trivia Question #1

Hey ya’ll! I know I’m infilitrating the terrain of The Wine Guy, but it was a crazy weekend, so I’m just getting to what I should have gotten to on Monday morning. Hopefully this won’t be a common occurrence. So without further ado Jacob and I present the first question, in what will be a weekly series…

It’s going to last for three months, the person with the highest score (the most right) at the end will win a wine board created from the The Wine Guy himself. It’s a very cool prize and we’ll get a picture of it up ASAP. Send your trivia answers to food@slyoyster.com with “Wine Trivia” in the subject by Thursday at 5 p.m. We’ll post the winning answer Friday morning. If you don’t get it right, just remember that this is more of a marathon than a sprint!

Q: Name the two wines that share the same name as their appellation or DOC. Technically speaking, all the premier crus & grand crus of Burgundy qualify for this answer, but I’m not referring to those. Hint: They are both from really small regions, one in Italy & one in France, and the wines I’m speaking of are the only wines produced in their respective regions.

Weekly wine contest

We’re going to start something in the next coming weeks in order to get people interested in not only the site, but also the wonderful weekly column by Jacob, AKA The Wine Guy. Each week he’ll propose a not all too difficult trivia question having something to do with wine. The first person to respond with the correct answer will get showered with affection and love from The Oysterites. Actually, Jacob and I will discuss what we can give away, if anything. If there are any wine related companies wanting to donate some wine related gifts for us to give away as schwag we’d be greatly appreciative! We scratch your back, you scratch ours?

We’ll have the first question this Monday morning. Hope you like wine trivia! Send your responses to food@slyoyster.com with “Wine trivia” in the subject line. We’ll even print some of the answer, intelligent or not!

Bringing sexy (grapes) back

So what’s the new “in” thing in wines? What are all the trendy yuppies and urbanites washing down their lamb, Chilean sea bass and sushi with? From what I’ve seen in the wine world, and spoken about with clients & professionals, the hottest trends are dominated by indigenous white grapes. This is not to say that white is going to overtake red anytime soon as king of the marketplace. Red wine is still entirely more popular than white, with it outselling at about 4 to 1. However, people who are moved by the, let’s say, fashionable side of life have a “been there, done that” mentality and want something new & intriguing. Wines from the southern hemisphere have been hot for a while. Look at New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc or Australian Shiraz. Argentinian Malbec is still ‘en fuego’, and we all know what Sideways did for Pinot Noir.

The only new red that has the potential to blow up is the Mencia grape, from Spain, which I’ll write more about at a later date. It seems though that most people have tried these wines, loved them or hated them and are looking for something new. Now several white wines have finally been given their chance to shine. It’s time for Verdejo, Albarińo, Gruner Veltliner & Vermentino to glisten in the consumer’s limelight.

The Spanish seem to keep impressing us with one new varietal after another. One of these new great wines capable of dancing all over our palates is Verdejo. It is indigenous to the region of Rueda, right next to Toro, just one hour north of Madrid. I first tried this varietal only two years ago, from a producer called Naia ($14).

It was a sunny summer day in Boston and I was looking for something different to tickle my tongue. Naia has an eye-catching label, with a cream colored background and bright orange font accentuated by squiggly lines all over. Once the wine was in the glass I couldn’t put it down! The tropical flavors of kiwi & guava were prominent while the hints of citrus and a very pleasant herbaceous note lingered in the background. While living on Hawaii I discovered that Naia has an extended family: a big sister, Naiades, and a little sister, Las Brisas. The best Verdejo goes into the Naiades and weighs in at about double the price of Naia. Las Brisas is mostly Verdejo but blended with Viura (a.k.a. Macabeo, one of the varietals used in the sparkling wine of Spain, Cava) and Sauvignon Blanc. Still, Las Brisas is a delicious, fun, picnic or sneak to the beach kind of wine for right around $10. This is a wine to buy by the case!

It is in the northwestern portion of the Iberian Peninsula that we must go to find our next white grape. It is known by two names, Albarińo & Alvarinho. This grape is very thick skinned & productive, yet low yielding due to the small amount of juice that can be obtained from it. In Spain it is grown in Rias Baixas, (pronounce the x like ‘sh’) the region located in the northern part of Spain that extends over Portugal; there it is called Albarińo. It’s also grown in Portugal, known as Alvarinho, where it constitutes a large percentage in one of the world’s most over-looked, undervalued wine regions, ‘Vinho Verde’ (green wine). Generally the Portuguese use this varietal for more of a high-quality table wine. In Spain they are medium to full-bodied and tend to exhibit sexy, peachy-lime & apricot fruit characteristics while maintaining good balance and acidity. Think of an exotic New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc that is more voluptuous & round and not quite as dry or tart. Try it with full flavored entrees that you would normally have a full-bodied Chardonnay with. Good dishes include: lobster, scallops beurre blanc, mahi mahi, or sole. One example that I really like is called Arrantei, which retails for around $18. There’s another, Mar De Frades ($15), that comes in a unique blue bottle with a boat on the label (The boat only appears when it’s ready to serve and disappears when it’s too warm). I just found out while searching for the correct spelling that it was actually featured as Playboy.com’s Drink of the Week! How’s that for an advertisement?! But these wines need no advertising, as they are some of the finest whites that Spain & Portugal have to offer. This grape would be my pick as the hottest new thing in the wine world.

Some people might never think of Austria as a world class wine producer because of its more common association with the Alps, yodeling & skiing. RI-COLA! However it has surprised everyone in the past few years as quality Gruner Veltliner has found its way to the American palate. This is not a wine for the masses but for a more sophisticated wine drinker. You can find it now at a lot of the hip, contemporary wine bars and restaurants where it is often referred to as “GruVe”. One of the most notable characteristics of the wine is the aroma of freshly cracked white pepper. It is pale in color and on the palate it is usually light to medium bodied unless made in an off-dry style or into an eiswein. When made traditionally, it is very vivid and known for being spicy and showing vegetal or legume flavors. The flip side, being an “international” style, contributes butterscotch, spice & tropical flavors on a creamier, full bodied scale. Generally speaking, the ones that we are most likely to encounter in the U.S. are the former; as the latter are usually part of an extremely miniscule operation that, if we are lucky, makes 100 cases.

Last but not least is Vermentino, which is mostly grown on the French island of Corsica, the island of Sardinia and the northwestern Italian region of Liguria. If you really look you might even find some Californian versions from Tablas Creek or Uvaggio. It is a medium-bodied, deliciously bright, fresh and focused wine with loads of citrus and tropical flavors. Try it with raw seafood, grilled fish, on a sun filled day, or all three! This is not a wine of contemplation and subtleties, but don’t say I didn’t warn you when all of your friends fall in love with it and finish it all.

On a related subject, there is a new brand of wine glasses from a Danish company named Eisch. Each glass retails for about $15-$25, depending upon the purpose of the glass. They are the first to produce a glass that prematurely ages or aerates wine through the composition and treatment of the crystal. What every person promoting these glasses will tell you is that in just 2-4 minutes it alters the wine to be smoother, less tannic & more integrated. What they won’t tell you is what happens to the wine after those 2-4 minutes. What stops the wine glass from aerating the wine? NOTHING! Over-aeration of a wine eventually leads to oxidation and is a very non-desirable quality of wine. Think about a bottle or glass of wine that you left in the open air for a while and how it tasted when you came back to it. Now maybe these Eisch lovers pour just enough wine in the glass to “breath”, drink it in one gulp and then repeat, over and over again. I highly doubt it, but that’s the only way I could possibly see them as beneficial. Nonetheless through multiple tastings with other wine professionals and connoisseurs, the majority including myself do not find that the way wine tastes in these glasses to be anything better than adulterated and doctored. I do encourage you, if you have the resources, to experiment with them and form your own judgments. Always remember that wine is subjective and hopefully you’ll find that ‘In Vino Veritas’!

Nominee for father of the year

I suppose I could write a snarky lead in, but in all honesty this clip pretty much speaks for itself. At an 11-year old wrestling match, one father takes things into his own hands. It’s pretty depressing really and probably speaks volumns about parent’s who still act like kids and not adults.

Like my buddy Boo Smallen says, “maybe it’s time we should require parenting liscences. You know, so people can’t have kids without being aware of what they’re in for. We do it for doctors, lawyers and teachers, why not parents?” As strange an idea as it is, I’m not sure I don’t disagree with him.

The sound is slightly off. Instead of the news report you get the wonderful Tucker Carson. Not that the clip needs sound, though.

DVD Releases 2/13

Movies

13 Tzameti - A suspenseful thriller about a young man who becomes entangled in a deadly game of Russian roulette. It’s got subtitles, so that’s why no one has heard of it. A shame, because it’s worth looking into for fans of mystery/suspense/noir.

The Departed - Was there anyone who didn’t enjoy this movie? I liked it. A lot. But it was still not as great as the original Hong Kong version, “Infernal Affairs.” One of the few instances where the Boston accents didn’t make me want to kill someone, due in large part to local guys, Matty Damon and Marky Wahlberg. Even DiCaprio didn’t blow it. Scorcese should finally get his due come Oscar time.

Half Nelson - Ryan Gosling, well make that Oscar-nominated Ryan Gosling to you, plays a drug addicted teacher, who forms an unlikely bond with one of his students. Breakthroughs all around for Gosling, Shareeka Epps, and the creative team behind it: Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden.

Infamous - Pity poor Toby Jones. While Phillip C. Hoffman got all the love and adulation for his portrayal of the gasp! gay writer Truman Capote, it was widely believed this was the superior movie and Jones’s the superior performance. Featuring a stellar cast with the likes of Daniel Craig, Gweneth Paltrow, Sandra “I can do more than rom-coms” Bullock and Sigourney Weaver.

Marie Antoinette - Sophia Coppola’s much maligned follow-up to “Lost in Translation.” Which could have been the title for her movie about the yet-to-be-beheaded Queen of France. The story follows the teenage Queen as she tries to produce an heir to the throne and have fun while doing it. Too much was written about the soundtrack and use of new-wave songs and not enough about Coppola’s intention of showing the story of Marie Antoinette from a woman’s perspective and not a man’s.

The U.S. vs. John Lennon - A fascinating documentary examining John Lennon’s transformation from musical messiah to anti-war advocate during the tumultuous Sixties. Not surprising the gov’t was scared of the icon and tried to put a stop to his shenanigans.

Zoom - Um… well this Tim Allen movie is being released today. Does anyone care? I didn’t think so, but he plays a superhero trying to teach a group of kids how to be super and heroic.

Television

Beauty and the Beast: Season One - Linda Hamilton and Ron Perleman in a modern retelling from CBS. Man the early nineties were great for serial television.

The Golden Girls: Season Seven - I can’t believe the adventures of Blanche, Rose, Dorothy and Sophia lasted this long. But this was the final season. Fun fact for the day: In real life, Rose (Betty White) was actually a year older than her mother on the show Sophia (Estelle Getty).
The Hills: Season One - MTV drek.

Picket Fences: Season One - David Kelly’s charming and quirky show finally sees the light of DVD.

Mastors of Horror: Pelt - The second season of Showtime’s experiment continues with this outing from Italian master Dario Argento. Stars Meat Loaf as a guy obsessed with making a fur coat out for a lesbian stripper. How very Buffalo Bill of him. Word on the street is PETA would be proud of the film.

CD Releases for 2/13

Pretty slow day for album releases. The best of the lot are from Lucinda Williams and Van Morrison.

Lucinda Williams - “West” General consensus is that, her new album is pretty darn good. I could provide a long list of other reviews, but they all pretty much say the same thing. Best album of her career, great songwriter, great singer, blah, blah, blah.

Van Morrison - “At the Movies: Soundtrack Hits” It’s really nothing more than yet, another Van Morrison “Greatest Hits” type collection. But dang, does he have some darn great hits. Still there’s nothing hear that hasn’t been already released.

Dr. John - “In the Night: The Early Sessions of Dr. John” Weird, but there isn’t much out there on this release. I woulda thought there’d be something, but hardly any reviews or information at the online retailers as well.

Wow, pretty lame day for new releases. Anyway, if you’re like me and Lucinda Williams only slightly floats your boat try her with a helping of Flogging Molly.

Flogging Molly w/ Lucinda Williams - “Factory Girls” (Mp3)

Hypocrite Mitt

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney officially announced his intentions to seek the 2008 GOP nomination this morning during a press conference in Dearborn, Michigan. Based on his speech, Romney appears to be courting the hard-right.

I love America and I believe in the people of America. I believe in God and I believe that every person in this great country, and every person on this grand planet, is a child of God. We are all sisters and brothers. I believe the family is the foundation of America – and that we must fight to protect and strengthen it. I believe in the sanctity of human life. I believe that people and their elected representatives should make our laws, not unelected judges. I believe we are overtaxed and government is overfed. Washington is spending too much money. I believe that homeland security begins with securing our borders. I believe the best days of this country are ahead of us…

photo courtesy of www.philocrites.comHe noted his family’s history, his father was Gov. of Michigan and helped to develop the Nash Rambler, his one forgettable term as Gov. of Massachusetts, cleaning up the Salt Lake Olympics in 2002 and his success as a venture capitalist as evidence for his qualifications.

Oh yeah, he’s also a Mormon, in case you haven’t heard. And still people wonder if, like with JFK’s Catholicism, that being a Mormon will impede his ability to lead this country. If anything will impede his ability to lead the country it’s that Romney has no backbone. He spent the past year-and-a-half as Gov. of Massachusetts out of the state launching his presidential campaign and leaving the state in the care of Lt. Gov. Kerry Healy. Now I agree that people can and should be able to change their minds, but just 12 years ago when he was running for the Senate against Ted Kennedy, Romney talked about what he stood for before the citizens of Massachusetts and it was 180 degrees different that what he stood for this morning. Apparently, he believes one thing to appeal to the “liberal” citizens of Tax-achusetts and something entirely different when running for the GOP nomination.

Oddly enough in the video below, Romney sounds like a standup guy and Kennedy looks like an idiot. Unfortunately, the Mitt Romney from 12 years ago isn’t running for the Office of the President.

The kicker of the announcement speech was his insistance that the Ford Hybrid is a giant step toward weaning this country off of gasoline and its pollutants.

Next to us is a Ford hybrid. It is the first giant step away from our reliance on the gasoline engine. It is already changing the world of transportation.

Yes, ladies and gentleman, Mitt Romney has never heard of the Toyota. The best-selling car company in America and the car company who has been developing hybrid engines for the past ten years, while the “innovative” Detroit three were busy pumping out gas-guzzling SUVs and figuring out ways to lose tons of money while laying off the employees Mitt hopes will vote for him.
